Honestly, that sounds like you need to have a chat with your GM.
TBH, it feels to me like the GM intended the party to be trapped so the Evil Wizard (TM) could monologue, impress the players with their power, then leave to be killed another day.
Doesn't your ranger have ensnaring strike? last time I checked, that would break concentration.

I have to stress that this enemy spell-caster is a bad-ass. He's basically the BBEG of this leg of the campaign.
