Well... my players have never even thought of nets in our current campaign, but I guess if you had a stronghold you could drop nets on peop0le laying siege... other than that, yeah its useless.
Restrained is a really strong condition and hitting with a net forces the target or one of their allies to waste an action removing the net.
You can make the ranged attack without disadvantage if you have the Crossbow Expert feat, the enemy can't see you or they're incapacitated. In the latter two cases you'd normally get advantage as well (almost everything that incapacitates also grants advantage on attack rolls).
Question: Who uses nets? What are they good for? They seem kinda useless to me.
I use them to set booby traps. I use them to throw onto a group of enemies if they are clustered together. I've silvered them before for use against undead/fiends/etc. I've used them with a grappler focus'd ex-pit fighter. I've used them to catch fish/corral giant leeches/etc catching small animals to either use as food, or as a trap, or to clear a path.
Their use is only limited by the imagination of what you think you can do with them. I've also used them to set a hammock up to sleep in high above ground to avoid risk of camping on ground while running/hiding from people.
edit: Tie enough together, and you can make a "bridge" of sorts too. As long as you can make a good throw with the grappling hook/weighted thing on the end to secure it on the other side.

In case InquisitiveCoder's message wasn't clear, nets suffer from having a normal range of 5', which, coupled with the rule that making a ranged attack while having an enemy who can see you and isn't incapacitated within 5' gives you Disadvantage, means that barring other conditions, net attacks are always made with Disadvantage. Crossbow Expert feat would eliminate that Disadvantage. Sharpshooter feat would negate the Disadvantage of using the net at 10'-15' (its long range). The enemy not being able to see you (because you're invisible, the enemy is blinded, or whatever), or being incapacitated, would negate the Disadvantage from the "enemy within 5'" rule, and would (probably) grant you Advantage, as well.
The only things that is ever truly useless is something that is just directly outclassed by another thing that has the same function (I.E: Fire bolt vs. Eldritch Blast as a Warlock).
Nets are limited in when you can use them, but being able to restrain a target is far from 'useless'

I agree, but would use something like spear vs trident (where the spear is better than or equal to in all aspects to the trident), since a case can be made that in some situations, Fire Bolt can be better than Eldritch Blast (e.g. attacking an object, attacking a creature that is vulnerable to fire but not force, or resistant/immune to force but not fire), rendering Fire Bolt not useless for a Warlock, even if they also know Eldritch Blast. Small nitpick, not actually making an argument in favor of Warlocks actually choosing to learn Fire Bolt over Eldritch Blast. =)
Non-Combat: you can load it with gear and pull it if you are carrying to much, or if you have a fallen teammate, drag them in it
If your a jerk like me, and funnel your enemy into a corridor, place the net near you so they have to climb over to get to you, giving you ab extra round of attacks
If your can knock someone prone, use it to pin them down, or depending on it's size, 2 people grab a side and charge the enemy, scooping them up like fish. (Depending on attack order, after they are scooped up, find a way to secure the net so they have to escape it)
