Hello. I am not even sure if my question belongs here or if you guys support that kind of questions...
We are new players od DnD and I am playing as really hedonist wizard (evil) . We were hired to protect a person in a caravan and that NPC gave us side quest. He hid his magical dagger near the road in a small cave and ofered som gold for retreiving it. We got it, my character has it in his possession at the moment ent, he can feel that it's magic dagger and he wants to keep it. Can you guys help me to find a way how to hid it from the NPC (who can do magic so he would feel it on me if we came "empty handed" )? We wont come back so I cant burry it or something like this
Don’t forget that Detect Magic lets the caster tell what school of magic he’s detecting. So if you don’t have another item that gives off transmutation magic, the NPC will be able to tell that you have 2 different items because of the different schools of magic.
I’d suggest hiding it on the bottom of one of the wagons in the caravan so that it’s not on your person for a few days. You’ll be traveling and it will be hidden securely until you can grab it later. Plus a thick enough layer of wood blocks Detect Magic.
Thanks for advice guys. I dont have the bag nor other magic items and I am worried that my DM will steal my dagger if I hide it in the wagon. Will probably just figure out the way to be at the rear of caravan instead of at the top with our NPC tp protect Cheers guys
Best hiding place I've seen used yet was by my wife in my current campaign: Give it to your familiar, dismiss your familiar, now it's in a pocket dimension and unobtainable by anyone but you.

Strictly speaking, magic items don't have schools of magic. Even if the DM house rules that, Detect Magic only shows auras for objects you can see. It's not going to show an aura on a hidden object, and if anyone in the party has magic items or active spells (like Mage Armor) that explains why Detect Magic is pinging.

This strategy is going to depend on the DM's generosity, since it's not something Find Familiar explicitly allows. This use of the spell lets you mimic Secret Chest and Instant Summons (even if in a reduced capacity), so a DM might reasonably decide not to allow it.

There's always the bag of holding. You can't detect what isn't there.

If you have a different magic item, you can hide the dagger near it and when the NPC senses magic from you, convince him it was the other item.
Other than that, there is arcanist's magic aura, the more expensive nondetection, or extra dimensional storage via spell or item (like secret chest or bag of holding).

Haven’t used this account in forever. Still a big fan of crawling claws.
It's awfully hard to hide something from the DM :)

Small lead lined container or a bulky 1inch thick walls metal box block detect magic, and I assume similar effects.
Hide it blade deep in his back.

Need a small lead box to hide it from divination magic.
