I am running a dragon fight for my party this Saturday night but I don't want a tpk.. I was wondering what d dragon I should use... I have a lvl 7, 6, 5 & 5 and someone multiclassing a lvl 4 monk and a lvl 2 vampire home brew
I would use a young dragon and give him some help from other monsters or mechanically within his lair, like fire/acid/ice pits depending on the colour of the dragon.
If a young one seems to easy bump his HP to max and/or throw in more little helpers/traps or environmental disadvantages for the PCs.
A red one in a lair with lava pools and heat waves.
A green one in a swampy area with poison fumes and some acolytes that are mad because of the fumes.
A blue one on top of a snow covered mountain peak within a snowy lightning storm.
Something like that should work. Let me know if it helped
I concur with Yemika. An adult dragon is too strong, but I think a party of five characters will walk over a young dragon fairly easily if you don't give him some backup. If it's appropriate for your story, you could make a young blue dragon and give him a shambling mound as a lumbering lair guardian. Then run the dragon's lightning breath through the shambler to heal it occasionally and also attack the players when it gets low on health. That could walk the line between too strong and just strong enough, depending on how often you choose to heal the monster.
Depending on party mix, you can have it flying around outside. If your party doesn’t have good ranged attacks, that alone can make it effectively much harder.
Dragons are much more effective and deadly in the open, normally a field, where they can fly down, pick up a party member, fly back up, drop the party member after only attacking them, and then repeat. Occasionally breathing the breath weapon when they have it as well. Very deadly, and the party will have to be smart if they're melee, not ranged.

Use DNDB encounter creator. Add the levels of your party in and do through dragons until you get to one that is hard.
