Don't overreach yourself too soon. You'll end up warning all of the Sword Coast that a threat is rising in the east and they will muster against you. Try to acquire allies a quickly as possible and take over major supply routes. There are many Uthgardt clans around there and might be good allies. Otherwise, keep an eye on the dwarven holds. Taking Citadel Adbar or Felbarr (or both!) would be a master stroke but it would be a hard campaign. You would then have the supplies and forges to outfit an army and strike out for the rest of the Coast.

Good advice. I didn't think about trying to take a stronghold, but it would be a quite valuable strategic location. On the other hand, it would be nearly impossible to take by force of arms due to its highly fortified nature.

It could be done, but the army needed would be HUGE. Force isn't the only answer though, if you're not inclined to go straight into a war you might be able to get into one of the holds and assassinate a key figure at put a figurehead in their place. Conquering the Sword Coast is a daunting task, you should look back in history and try to find a similar event, Ghengis Khan maybe?

I'm a changeling. Maybe I can find a way to sneak in wearing the guise of a dwarf from Citadel Adbar, then disable some of their security systems, and then send an army of ogres?

If you have enough ogres then it could very well work. Make sure to target those in charge of security, without leadership they'll be slower to act. Also, make sure they don't get word out to the other holds when you attack, you could end up beseiged days after taking Citadel Adbar. Aside from that, make sure to take control of River Rauvin, the nearest river, as soon as possible. If you plan on building an army it could be used to deliver supplies and troops.
Oh, I have enough Ogres. If I can get the gates open, I'm sure 1,000 ogres will do the trick.
Well it didn't really work for the siege of Helm's Deep, (in LOTR) and Saruman had 10,000 orcs.
Those are just orcs, and they didn't have a spellcasting shapeshifter on their side.
As long as Elminster doesn't show up riding a horse with a speed of 120 and with 400 horsemen at his side. Also they were Uruk-Hai which are basically improved orcs.
One thousand ogres at level 5, very impressive, I commend you sir. With their amazing stupidity they likely won't think of betraying you even facing down a dwarven citadel. I'm excited to see how this turns out. Also, who else is in the party?

Saruman's orcs didn't have a man on the inside to open the doors for them. If they did Helm's Deep might have fallen. Elminster is a very big problem though, if you can remove him from the scene, the sooner the better.

An Aarakocra Kensei Monk, and a DMPC Wizard.
(Yes, the ogres were a bit difficult to get. Took some magic trickery, deception, fake omens from their god, and offers of building them a castle.)
Even with your ogre army, you won't be able to conquer the sword coast alone. You'll need allies. Do some research on the area, and look for other monsters who you can convince to join the cause.
Personally, I would explore Anauroch. Maybe form some allies with the Bedine tribes. But the main thing I'd look for is a blue dragon. They aren't as capricious as red dragons, and they like to lord over humanoids, rather than destroying them. You could promise them suzerainty over part of your conquered territory, as long as they promise to help you conquer the rest of the sword coast. You could even use their minions as part of the army. And if something goes awry, you can fight the dragon, and claim that you prevented this threat from invading the rest of the sword coast, elaborating it as you wish. As long as you win the fight, of course.

My armour is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!
Okay, I've made some progress since the last update. I have 2 blue shadow dragons under my control (long, long story), have conquered Silverymoon using deception and then physical assault. I had to separate Silverymoon from the Lord's Alliance using trickery first, so they wouldn't be able to get help when we attacked their city. I'm now level 7, have command of a few different regions, listed below:
Newfort
Deadsnows
Hawk's Nest
Castle Hartwick
Stagwick
Hartwick
The rest of Hartsvale
Silverymoon
(I have captured Laeral Silverhand, took her place in Waterdeep, stole her magic items and money, and also killed Vajra Safahr. Long, long story, involving using deception, surprise, magic items, and a spell scroll of power word kill.)
I now am planning on taking on the Dwarfholds of the North, starting with Citadel Adbar, then Citadel Felbarr, and then Sundabar.
Any advice? I need a way to infiltrate Citadel Adbar, keep the dwarves from fleeing, and then take them over.

I'm not well versed in FR lore, but I guess you could have daily shadow dragon raids and have your troops cut off supply lines until they surrender or starve to death.
You've effectively surrounded the citadels which will help if they try to run for help. If the dwarves know that you're going around conquering everyone you might want to pretend to be a group dwarven refugees from another citadel. Beg to enter and ask for troops be sent to aid the other citadel (let's say Felbarr). When the relief army leaves for Felbarr, have your army be waiting hidden and ambush them. While they are being ambushed, you're in Adbar and can try to take out whoever is ruling Adbar or whatever. If they haven't heard of your actions try to infiltrate it as a dwarf, sneak around and do what you can to let your army in. If deciet doesn't appeal to you, Adbar has a giant chimney in the middle of it that you could send the dragons down to cause mayhem. One thing that doesn't change thoug, you have to lower the drawbridge to get in your ogres.
Like TheRagingFlame said, allies will be a tremendous help. Menzoberranzan is close to Silverymoon and provides easy access to the Underdark. Once you get to the point where you have many regions under your command, you may be able to threaten other regions/towns into surrendering.
