I am playing a gunslingher in a champaigh and i dont know what race to be. All i know about my charcter is that they are sorta the sheriff archatype and is fantasy canadian. Anything will help. Also, i need help with choosig his background. If anything you say is a homebrey pls make shure it is balenced, my dm is very strict on homebrew content.

Are you using Tasha’s rules for floating racial asi?

For background I might suggest either the Investigator or Urban bounty Hunter. For race…? I mean, pretty much whatever strikes your fancy I guess.

I hate to say it, but when in doubt there’s always the custom race or variant human, especially if there is a “gunslinger” style/essential theme you need to make it work that you would like to get early. 

There is no sherif or law enforcement background that I know of (surprisingly), so something like the Urban Bounty Hunter might be your best bet.

Do you know what class/subclass you are choosing?

A gunslinger is a fighter subclass from critical roll. 

Find out about the floating asi. 
As sposta said, any can work, so the best thing is to to find one you think will be cool.

If you’re trying to optimize, and you can’t use floating asi,  pick a race that boosts your dex since that’s what you’ll want highest. If you’re allowed to move ability scores around, then pick any race you want, just choose dex as your highest score. 
But really, if your dex score is 1 or two points lower than what it could possibly be, you’ll still be fine. Just go for what’s fun for you.

A funny suggestion would be thri kreen because of holding multiple weapons but my serious suggestion is half elf
