I'm gonna wait to see those blog entries in the coming months before I anticipate a "6th editions" as opposed to a consolidation/realignment of some rules. Whatever's coming in 2024 sounds like it will be more backwards compatible with what we have now than past edition moves.
However, I am very interested in learning more about the spell caster monsters/NPC stat blocks no longer using spell slots, but a different spell/magic management system for less DM administrative burden.
Also bummed that the Mord's Multiverse book (where you're going to see that new write up style for Monsters, won't be available outside the boxed set initially, but I didn't like the two covers shown in the boxed set so hoping they'll be something different available when it gets a solo release.
@Yurei, yeah the vid in question is around 45 minutes and they show some pages to contrast say the Volo's description of a Great Old One Warlock and how the stat block will look in the new Mord's Multiverse book. There will be some blog posts diving a bit deeper on a lot of these changes. Got me enough to sign up for their mailing list.
I'm also leaning toward thinking Planescape is going to be one of the classic settings. And "space hamsters" are evoked at the end, though a deep Baldur's Gate cut makes me think Spelljammer may be on the horizon too.
Well, it looks like we're getting a 5.5e in all but name. And the Boo (the Miniature Giant Space Hamster) cover art seems to suggest that we're getting Spelljammer sometime soon, which I would love.
The "5.5e" will be more like revised versions of the PHB races, classes, and subclasses to fit how Tasha's Cauldron of Everything has been doing them (moving cultural traits away from races, giving more abilities to races and classes/subclasses based off of your Proficiency Bonus, giving automatically known spells to Ranger and Sorcerer subclasses, etc). Hopefully they will also redo Backgrounds to give more weight, especially now that culture has been moved out of race.
There's also a compendium book coming out next year that will have 30 races and a ton of monsters. It's supposed to have all of the monsters from Volo's Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, but a bit extra ones, as far as I can tell. It's called "Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse", which seems like it will also have information about the First World if the "Multiverse" in the title is anything to go by.
Anyway, this is super big news and really excited. 2024 is awhile away, but that's not much time to completely redo that much of 5e. I'm glad they're doing something big for the 50th Anniversary of D&D, though (which is also the 10th anniversary of D&D 5e).

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
I'm also concerned as there were hints Wotc maybe doing their own digital platform and cutting companies like DND Beyond, Roll20 etc out of the picture.
"I can actually reveal today that we have earlier this year - we began work on the next evolution of Dungeons and Dragons - new versions of the Core Rule Books, which will be coming out in 2024 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dungeons and Dragons ... with the surveys we have been giving out ... the next evolution of the game ... we are doing the best to give you the version of the game that you really want; so we can't really say much more yet about what our plans are, as we are still making them; but you are gonna see more surveys like that .... next year - the timing is next year, so next year we will have plenty more to say about those books and what they mean for D&D .... one thing by the way I can assure you these new versions of the books are gonna be completley compatible with all those 5th Edition products that you already own and love and all those products that we will release between now and then .... so next year we will have more to say."
That's more or less word for word what was said by Ray Winninger.
I hope they stick to their promise.and keep compatible. That wouod be really great. If they create another edition that isn't compatible with what I have... that would not be so great. I want to build my collection, but not if I'm going to get a few books and then end up starting all.over again in 3 years time. That could put me off the franchise.

So is the Mordenkainens book in the giftset the new book from the second bulletpoint, then?

So is the Mordenkainens book in the giftset the new book from the second bulletpoint, then?
Yes. It's basically most of the non-monster manual monsters and playable races from other books combined and updated from what I could gather.
So if you started D&D next year the 6 must-have books would be Players Hand Book, Dungeon Masters Guide, Monster Manual + Gift Set Books (Updated Tashas, Updated Xanathars, Monsters of the Multiverse)

Looks like I'm getting a belated Christmas present then! I was contemplating getting TCoE and XGtE, glad I didn't! I'm curious whether they'll update DDB existing copies or insist on people buying them again.

They're exactly the same books, aren't they? Only Volokainen's is new.

Only if they rework the DMG substantially (it just doesn't do a good job of what it should be doing IMO), which I sincerely hope for but don't really expect. Would be a great time to do it, but the PHB is probably going to get most of the attention.

Have not had a chance to watch yet. But from what I'm seeing from those who have, it sounds way to heckin' early to start getting up in arms about this junk. I would suspect they're not changing action resolution at all - all the junk an adventure tells you to make/let the party do will still be there. I would anticipate cleaning up of underperforming classes, adjustments to ancillary rules that aren't working the way they're supposed to, and perhaps some overhauls of the Adventuring Day concept since pretty much flat nobody uses it anymore, or at least some Official Guidance on what to do for games that don't run on the Standard Adventuring Day. It'll still be 5e, and not even with much of any qualifier on that. Just 5e with a facelift and maybe fewer total pants classes/subclasses. All the adventures will still work as written.
It'll be fine. Honest.

So thrilling and yet so foul. I'm thrilled, furious, but mostly broken. What a morning. What a day. What a blow.

Not sure what "the worst" would be, to be honest, but if it's supposed to be backwards compatible it's not going to be a new edition by my standards.
