I'm looking for a subclass, feat, or something that gives you a bonus in mounted combat? Is there anything official or unofficial or homebrewed you know of?
There's a Mounted Combat feat that gives a few bonuses, and the Cavalier fighter subclass gives very minor bonuses to being mounted. But overall mounted combat has not been significantly represented in 5E.

It’s much less of a resource investment to re-summon it than to take a feat to try to keep it alive. And even with the feat, it will probably die, mounts are pretty fragile. And pallys are a bit MAD, so you can really use the ASIs.
If you’re a paladin, probably stay away from the mounted combat feat. You’ll only get 3-4 feats in the whole campaign, but if your horse dies, you’ll have more level 2 spell slots the next morning. I will consider it, but I really want to lean into mounted, as I will be equipping a lance. The character’s name is Launcelot, after all.

I'm not really worried about an optimal build. I want to build a character to a theme and make the best character I can within that theme. I'm pretty attached to the mounted concept, or at least to using a lance. Is there any other viable way to use a lance besides mounted? Disadvantage at 5 feet seems pretty limiting if you are in melee on foot.

If you know any good house rules that help balance mounted combat, I might be able to convince the DM to allow them.

Not so much a "house rule" but I homebrewed a fighting style for fighters and paladins that could work for what you want and pair nicely with Mounted Combatent if you choose to use it.
Equestrian (fighting style)
When a creature targets your mount with an attack, you can use your reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll.
But again, thats homebrew and not a house rule. Not sure what your DMs policy on that stuff is

Mounted Combatant feat is going to be your friend, as is Find Steed. The biggest issue you'll experience is area of effect spells that hit your mount. A warhorse only has 19 hit points, so a failed saving throw (it only gets +1 to dex - although as a pala you can give it bonuses) against a Fireball is going to toast it every time. By the time you're level 5+ these types of effects become more and more common in fights, leading to your mount going down a lot of the time. Thankfully due to Find Steed you can just get it back, but at higher levels it will often get killed in the first turn of combat, so I'd advise talking to your DM about your steed possibly levelling up alongside you (for example, gaining temporary hp equal to your paladin level x proficiency bonus as long as you're mounted on it - at level 3 this is just 6hp, at level 9 it's 27 hp and so on).
Play with the dual-wielder and mounted combatant feat and you can use two lances while mounted. If you’re a bugbear you can do it at 15 feet reach.
This is both hilarious and scary.

IMO, if you reallyreally wanna have some fun in in D&D with mounted combat, play a Cavalier Fighter with the Mounted Combatant feat and have someone else in the party play a Centaur Rune Knight Fighter with the Sentinel feat. Let that sink in, the Centaur goes Large and the Cavalier saddles up and has all the benefits of an intelligent Mount with none of the drawbacks of it being run by the DM. Whenever an attack would hit the Centaur the Cavalier can redirect and that’s when Sentinel kicks in.
Or, another fun alternative would be to play as a Kobold Rogue with Mounted Combatant and Sentinel let the Centaur’s move proc the OA to proc your Sentinel so you can almost guarantee the second sneak attack per round because of Pack Tactics. And since the Kobold is small the Centaur can skip Rune Knight and stay Medium and maybe go Monk or something with ridiculous movement.
Another one I like is a Kobold Battle Master with Mounted Combatant and the Goading Attack and Maneuvering Attack Maneuvers, on a Centaur Ancestral Guardian with Sentinel. Think about that for a minute. Mounted Combatant on the Kobold gives the Barbarian with Danger Sense something somewhat better than Evasion, making the tank even tankier. The Ancestral Protectors combine with the agro feature from Mounted Combatant. The Fighter can use the Maneuvering Attack to trigger the Centaur to move and proc an OA to proc the MC redirect to proc the Sentinel Attack. And between them they have so many HP and high AC that they can pick and choose when to do what.
Or how about a Kobold Battle Master with Mounted Combatant on a Centaur Thief with Sentinel. The Kobold’s Mounted Combatant gives the Centaur a boost to their Evasion, and Second Story Work negates the detriment from Equine Build. The Battle Master can use Maneuvering Attack to get the Rogue to move to proc the OA which the Fighter redirects which procs the Thief’s Sentinel Sneak Attack.
Or a Kobold/Lightfoot Ancestral Guardian with Mounted Combatant on a Centaur Thief with Sentinel that just parks next to the BBE.
Or the Centaur is a Bladesinger with War Caster and a Kobold Ancestral Guardian rider!

That said: Some good spells with touch are things like heroism and protection from evil and good. Of course cure wounds, if you cast on yourself could help out an injured horse. Then there could be something like aid, where you could make your mount one of the three creatures. There's death ward if you ever get 4th level spells.
Then depending on you oath, there can be other fun stuff. I'm playing a halfling ancients paladin, so my character and his dog misty step all over the place. It actually helps with one of the Achilles' heels of mounts -- a ladder.
The other thing to work out with your DM generally is the mounted combat rules. If you are controlling the mount, it goes on your turn but can only dash, dodge or disengage, it can't attack. If you aren't controlling it, it can attack, but its going to go on its own initiative, so you may be sitting there with nothing to do while you wait for its turn, and then obviously, it will go where it wants, not necessarily where you want it to go. It's got a 6 int, and there's text that you're a "seamless unit" or something like that, but I read that as flavor text, not as meaning you can control it and it can still attack. This gets really important in how it might interact with the smite spells. They all have a range of self, so your mount would also benefit, so if the mount can attack, it can gain the benefit of the smite spell, which actually might make the spell as useful as the traditional smite. Any which way, better to be sure you agree on how it works before a fight starts so you don't end up frustrated with an on-the-fly ruling.
As far as lances, the only real solution is to also carry a sword (or axe or whatever, a normal melee weapon) for when you dismount, which as I understand is pretty much what mounted soldiers did. Not to mention that one day, you'll want a holy avenger, and those (RAW) only come in swords, not lances. You could go sposta's route, and take dual wielder, so you can have two lances, then when you get off, you switch to two swords. You don't really have a lot to do with your bonus action, so something that lets you get another chance to trigger a smite is a pretty solid choice, though pallys don't get the two weapon style, defense could help make up for the missing shield.

Yeah, I'm planning to equip a longsword as well. In fact that's what I'll start with unless the DM is generous and grants me a horse at level 1. I was thinking of switching to lance whenever I can obtain a decent mount, or level 5 at the latest when I learn Find Steed. But I'll keep the longsword at my side.

Really? A Fireball does 27 damage on average. With the feat, this is halved to 13 even on a failure, so a 19 hp war horse can survive one full-brunt Fireball.

Sure, if you want full plate for your horse, it's an exorbitant 6000 gp. But chain mail barding is only 300 gp for 16 AC. An upgrade to 17 AC with Splint is feasible at higher levels for 800 gp. But with Mounted Combatant, do you really need barding? It allows you to force any attacks to target you instead of your mount. Saves are the only thing you have to worry about.
Yes, a mount can go unconscious. The rules are not real clear, but I think that doesn't mean the mount instantly dies. It should make death saving throws like a PC. You should be able to stabilize it or use healing spells on it. Or if it's a Find Steed mount, you can cast the spell again.
I suppose I should expect my mount to go down in any protracted battle. But that's okay. It still served well for at least a round or two.

One way around this issue would be just to play a small race with a medium mount. Since a Lance doesnt have the Heavy property, there wouldnt be any penalty to using one as a gnome or other small being. The only issue is that you basically lose all the advantage on attacks you would get from Mounted Combatant as its unlikely youd be fighting small or tiny creatures a majority of the time. So there would be a tradeoff

In addition paladins or others who can find steed get some good bonuses with their mounts.

I suppose I should expect my mount to go down in any protracted battle. But that's okay. It still served well for at least a round or two.
One way around this issue would be just to play a small race with a medium mount. Since a Lance doesnt have the Heavy property, there wouldnt be any penalty to using one as a gnome or other small being. The only issue is that you basically lose all the advantage on attacks you would get from Mounted Combatant as its unlikely youd be fighting small or tiny creatures a majority of the time. So there would be a tradeoff
