Hello, with Wotc's new book, we have additional feature in addition to the new subclass. And I was wondering how those work?
Like, the features are in addition to the class base feature, so it's only more power, which seems odd balance-wise, and some seem to be added even if you don't check them, like the new fighting style, you can pick from them even if you do not have the additional feature with the new fighting style? Overall, I'm very confused about how does it work on ddb with those new additional features, and how to use them, if someone could clarify, I would appreciate it.
I second this. I tried enabling the optional class feature in the character creation, specifically for a ranger, and I didn't see Deft Explorer or Favored Foe replace Natural Explorer or Favored Enemy. Am I missing a step?
Apologies! I did miss a step. There is a second tab on in the Character Builder after you've selected the class where you select the optional features you want to use. I completely missed it, but I see it now.
I've tinkered more with the sheet, first, I think there is a bug with the ranger primal awareness not replacing primeval awareness, and second, it seem like no mater the class, if the additional fighting style is checked or not do not seem to matter, otherwise, it is rather intuitive how does it work.
I've already got a ranger built in DnDBeyond and I'd like to change to the optional class features Deft Explorer and Favored Foe. However, those don't appear as options in my character builder. I don't see a second tab anywhere to choose this. Do you have to start a completely new character sheet to gain access to these features? I can choose the new archetypes and spells, I just can't choose the new optional features.
no, go in preference, and there is 2 new toggle, on for customizing your origin, the other to optional class feature. activate the second, and then go into the class section, you'll be able to see a new category in between the class and spell, and additional feature section, clicking on it, you'll be able to replace the ranger feature, and add the other new one as you wish.
be aware that, ddb team is currently working on it, and some bugs has been reported about the feature not correctly replacing the favored enemy and natural explorer at all lvl.
Does anyone know if you need to buy the full book on dndbeyond to access these, or is there another option if all I want are the optional class features?
From what I've seen on the forum so far, you do need to purchase the book to get access to those optional class features as they are not something you can buy separately (unlike subclass, spell, magic item etc..)
Can anyone clarify what is optional and what isn’t? I would have thought the class archetypes were free to use At any time but I’m hearing quite a few people say the WHOLE book is optional and down to DM fiat. Well if the latter is the case...what is the point of the book?
Technically everything is optional. A DM can ban sorcerers, and it can be for a good reason like worldbuilding. Now that I'm done being smart about my answer, there are some class abilities in Tasha's that either replace abilities or add on to the ones the class already has. Every spellcaster got an optional expanded spell list (which is a thing that every DM should approve) and ranger got replacements for its first level abilities, both of which were severely underwhelming. There are also abilities that just add on to either buff abilities or classes as a whole.
The reason they call it "optional" is because there are a number of these features that change or replace features that existed before. They aren't eliminating those old features; they want you to have the option to have them. Existing characters can (at their dms discretion) switch to these features if it fits their character better, and new characters now have different options available to them should they choose. The point of the book is to give players more fun things to play with! =)
What books have optional features and what are those features? And what books are they in? I think I’ve purchased every subclass but not the books, but if the changes are good i might have to get them.

Tasha’s is the only book (currently) to offer optional features, for both classes and races. There are too many to go in to here: I’d suggest looking into reviews of Tasha’s for an over view. Among other things, there are optional class features for Rangers that fix some of the Ranger’s weaknesses.
I like the options, but wish you could change the spellcasting ability. I have a Knowledge Cleric who would benefit from using Intelligence cause his support nature is in the intelligence skills: history, Arcana, Religion, etc. He is book smart not street smart (wisdom).
So, my GM has Tasha’s and we have access to it. I’ve selected the two switches that turn it on yet my Druid does not have the additional Druid spells. Is there a reason for this?

I just buy the book on DNDbeyond but I do not see the option in my character sheet. How do I add those features?

Thank you! That did the trick! Apparently my passive investigation wasn't high enough to notice that.... >.>
Bump. I'd love to know about this, seeing as these optional features feel important.

I have the full book and I see some of the new options now. Do these new features get shared with my group if Content Sharing is enabled?
I believe so.
