Higher-ups at Wizards of the Coast are delaying the rollout of the new OGL because of the backlash from Dungeons and Dragons fans. That said, it currently has no intention to change its plans, and is counting on players forgetting their grievances. Evidently, it is looking at the bottom line, and subscriptions to D&D Beyond seem to be one of the quickest ways it can gauge its financial data.
This is not entirely correct. In general, taking one unconfirmed tweet from someone talking to an anonymous "insider" and presenting it as facts is not a good idea.

OP didn't even share an unconfirmed tweet. Is there some news relevant to the topic?

The only place that said anything about the Open Game License's rollout being delayed because of backlash was this Twitter post. The article that the original poster linked doesn't mention anything about a delayed Open Game License, and this information was presented as facts despite the fact that it isn't fully true or verified and has only really appeared in that tweet.

According to that unconfirmed tweet, WotC is using DDB sub cancellations as a metric for how poorly the OGL 1.1 is being received.
After being subscribed for a yearly subscription for many years now I have canceled my subscription. WOTC has to convince me BIG time for me to ever consider using another dollar on WOTC in their franchises I have been a consumer off for 8 years now.
Not going to buy any more MTG products, not going to buy any D&D content. If WOTC somehow manages to strangle all 3rd party content creation with law I rather make my own pen and paper offline system than ever giving WOTC another dollar again.

So glad I pulled the plug on the books buying frenzy. See ya never WotC... no matter what comes next, the mask is off (there is business and pure cruel greed). Hey... seems Paizo understands that (or they just used WotC blunder against them... that would be business).

got to wait for players to find other ways.. then drop.
Why? If you own the content, it's still yours without a subscription. If you have over 5 characters on DnDBeyond, export them as PDFs.
Granted, you can't share your content, but in truth. That's kind of what they should have been doing already given it would require players to at least buy the content they wanted to use instead of just using the DM's content. /shakes_my_head_at_why_I_needed_to_say_that_it_should_have_been_obvious
Maybe allow for a short window for new players to share content, but long term. Make them buy their own copy.
...too late, the Kraken has already been released. You ****ed up WotC/Hasbro! Heads should DEFINITELY roll.

If you got content sharing on your campaigns you will keep that until the period your subscription already is paid for runs out. But at some point yes this is true.
But me and my table is preparing to move from 5e all together (and then to a none WOTC system and not OneDND obviously). But not saying others have to do the same.
Usually this kind of thing gets going after they've released a new version of the game. This time they got the ball rolling early. Last time it was 3e to 4e. 4e to 5e was different in that they only pissed off the 4e players, the three or four people who still played it that is, everyone else already had issues with 4e and Paizo reaped the benefits. Now the fiasco revolves around the licensing of their precious game rules.
I have no illusions that this was intended to put the print copies of the rules in jeopardy, but to consolidate the digital market where all of the micro transactions will be taking place. They want no one to horn in on that cash cow. If you want to make content for their gaming table you have to pay the piper. And, it looks like if someone did make something people liked they would be within their rights, as the holder of the license, to shove a red hot poker up the poor sap's keester and just take his stuff.
I'll tell my players to create versions of their characters at different levels before it runs out. That will be good enough until the end of our campaign. Or I might convert my settings to PE2. Who knows... exciting times!

Time to invest in different systems. D&D is going to be officially abandoned. Hello to a new wide world of TTRPGs that respect their players.

Been playing dnd for 20 years. Don’t need some online b******t server to play. I’ve got the books. All I need is a webcam.
Congrats WoTC/Hasbro. You lost the community that Gary Gygax worked so hard in building. Glad to see you’re making him soooooo proud.
