I'm looking to pick up a few adventure modules, but I'm unsure as to what I exactly need. I have physical copies of most of the books, but I'd like to take advantage of the popup text and such to monsters and items throughout the adventure modules. Would I just need the compendium content for this if I don't care about the character creation tool or using the monsters elsewhere? Do I need to purchase the core books to access the information from there that's relevant to the adventure? Do I need the full package of each of these or just the compendium content?
Sorry for the all the questions, I just want to make sure I'm not spending extra on features I don't need. Thanks in advance!
So. You can purchase the monsters and items separately. If that doesn't get you what you want, you can then purchase the content. You won't have to pay extra as they discount it.
So for example. If monsters cost $6 and items cost $5 and the content costs $20 but all together it costs $25, that $25 would be discounted by the $11 you already spent, so the content would only cost $14 after you purchased the other parts.
EDIT: in regard to your second question. The adventure text, images, and such are all in the compendium content. That content would have links to the monsters, etc. If you don't have the monsters or items purchased I don't think you would be able to see the monsters or items.
If the monster stat blocks, spells, and/or magic items appear in the printed adventure publication, then when you purchase it digitally here, you will have access to them here. If they are in some other book, then you will have to either purchase that book or the particular portion of that book (monsters, items, spells, etc.) to access them. You just wouldn't have the compendium content from the other book if you hadn't purchased them. But having the hard copies might be all you need. (I'll warn you though, the convenience might compel you later to pick up the other book(s) as well!)
Note that many of those stat blocks fall within the SRD and will be available regardless.
As an example, I bought TOA, and then only those monsters from the MM that weren't in the SRD but were needed for TOA. (TOA includes any Volo's monsters needed)
