This PC picked a cantrip solely to help another PC. But in the ensuing adventure that other PC gained a magic item that fills that void. Now the PC in question (who has never used the cantrip)w to change it. Would you allow it?
I'd allow it, especially seeing as they never used the cantrip. They were going for teamwork, which isn't something I wouldn't want to punish

If it enhances the player's enjoyment without infringing on the other players', I usually have no reservations about making such a change.
Especially, if it turned out that the original choice didn't have the desired effect.

Absolutely. I am guessing light for a character that didn't have darkvision.
Any spellcaster with limited spells known gets to swap spells when they level up, but in this case, I would allow it immediately.

You are correct with the light spell... thanks for the reply
Agreed, I would definitely allow a PC to swap out a cantrip that they never used. Especially in the situation that you described.

Except cantrips.
But I would also allow it if it was never used.
