Hi. This is my first time playing D&D and the digital character builder was a huge help... until I got to level 4.
I'm a Tiefling Paladin and took the Oath of Vengeance. I use a mace, shield, and trident. Wearing chain mail. Duelist.
I'd like to add my oath in the character builder as well as the Heavy Armor Master feat. I went to the Store, player's handbook, and added these 2 items to my cart ($1.99 each.)
Is this the best way to purchase? Do I need to add spells (I have the Paladin spell cards). I'll probably have to purchase more later? Any advice on anything at all would be super helpful :-)
p.s. Str 15+2, Dex 12+1, Con 13+1, Int 9-1, Wis 10+1, Char 16+3
It's far cheaper to buy in bulk, so what you need to do is ask yourself "am I ever going to want to use some of this other stuff?"
In my opinion, you should purchase the whole of the Player's Handbook. It's unlikely that your going to always be playing the same character and the PHB has all the regular archetypes and feats. There are several codes you can use to make your purchase cheaper, I suggest looking around for them.
That's really up to you and how you feel about the uses you will get out of it. There are a lot of players here that purchase things piece-meal because of convenience, or because they just don't need to the full access to features for everything.
Then you've got the people who just buy it all and do all kinds of crazy things, lol.
If I had an opinion it would be just go for things as you need them to test out and see what works for you, and move on from that to see what else you may enjoy. In any case the investments on this site are worthwhile!
Ok, thanks. So I could spend $4 on 2 items or buy the Player's Handbook for $24 (after discount.) The handbook seems to be the better deal as I'm sure I'll need to piecemeal a couple more items, and then if I play again and again and again... :-)
Maybe I'm wrong, but if you buy piecemeal parts of a source book, like the player handbook for example, and later want to buy the player handbook, I was under the impression that the player handbook cost would be reduced by the piecemeal purchases you already made.
So if the above IS true, I see no downside to buying piecemeal at all.

You are correct. I eventually did buy the remainder of the PHB after having bought a significant portion of it piece-meal over the course of a few months. There's not really a downside to purchasing it, but bigger bulk transactions do better with coupon codes because I think with the overall cost it is better applied that way. 20% off a spell or 20% off PHB.
If money is a concern at all, I'd start out piecemeal like you were planning. If you find you are enjoying it and you see a good discount code later, you can purchase the entire Player's Handbook and/or another book. The money you've already spent piecemeal on that book's purchase will be credited toward the purchase.
In terms of spells, it is kind of up to you given that you have spell cards. The spells that are part of the Basic Rules (a subs-set of the Player's Handbook) are available to you for free. But there are other spells in the Player's Handbook that are NOT in the Basic rules that you would need to purchase here to access here. Unfortunately, there's not an easy way to filter for "Paladin spells NOT in the Basic Rules" to see them. Since you have the spell cards, I'd say wait to purchase spells until you have a handle on what spells you frequently prepare, and whether or not it proves to be a nuisance to not have them on DDB. Then purchase just those spells...at least until you hit the "spell bundle" price.
Thanks everyone. I didn't know single purchases would be counted as credit towards the book. That's the route I'll take! Thanks again
Glad you were able to get good advice and get this sorted!
