I am working on my book series still and as i am getting closer to the completion of my many species designs i wanted to ask something. As a dungeon master one of the things i always struggled with even given the books from 3.5 to 5e with military tactics. I love history and study it as a side hobby, but i feel that in dnd its a subject not really touched on to a greater degree.
Have you seen any books on military tactics of the different races? I know their are feats and such. However, i am thinking about doing like military units of note for each of my species design, common tactics, weapon loadouts and such in my books. And wondered if this is something the community already has or if it is a subject that is sorely missing overall.
Also if you have any other subjects that should be covered when it comes to military such as like reforms and things. Let me know, would love some ideas!
There is only one principle of war that is used in 95% of D&D in my experience, and that is Concentration of Force. The mechanics of D&D don't lend themselves to using real military tactics.
I believe you can find that stuff in the old AD&D or AD&D2e publications such as The Complete Book[s] of Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and Halflings, and Humanoids, etc. They had them for classes too and there may be more info within those books as well, it’s been a long time since I looked at them.
Hello all and happy holidays to all,
Just a quick question today,
I am working on my book series still and as i am getting closer to the completion of my many species designs i wanted to ask something. As a dungeon master one of the things i always struggled with even given the books from 3.5 to 5e with military tactics. I love history and study it as a side hobby, but i feel that in dnd its a subject not really touched on to a greater degree.

Thank you all for your answers in advance!

I don't think there is any lore about military units / tactics in D&D 5. There is an unearthed arcana article with rules for mass combat, though.
