Background: I am a novice with dungeons and dragons. I have been DMing for over a year now, but this is my first time on the other side of the screen. I always love the idea of psionics in D&D, and I always wanted to make a Drow psionic, based on a book a read. I was torn between the soulknife and the aberrant-mind. In the end, I decided to build a half-drow aberrant-mind sorcerer. We are playing Descent into Avernus, we only have three players, myself, and ranger and a cleric. We did one battle, and it was a struggle, the cleric is tanky, but he can't hold off all the enemies at once. The DM is going to give us an NPC to help us out, but I am wondering if I messed up and should have went with the soulknife. I know sorcerer are not the best class, but I took a gamble for the roleplay.
Question: Should I stick with the AM Sorcerer? It looks good on paper, but I not sure if it gets better with higher levels. Or should I multi-class into soulknife rogue, so I can useful in the front lines (I do have a high dex with this character)?

There is no such thing as "best class".
It is up to your GM to come up with an adventure suited for your party. Play the character you want to play. It is easiest for the GM if the party has balance, but isn't necessary.

Sorcerors do fine, if you take advantage of what makes them them - the metamagics and the sub-class spell lists. (Wizards do not get spells from other classes, but sorcerors can do that.)
Are you using those? Mind Sliver for example. If they fail their save and roll a -4 penalty to their next save it can be worth it to quicken a nasty save spell.
Also, the one thing worse than taking a sub-optimal class is multi-classing after level 4. It almost always makes you weaker than the original class. Soul Knife in particular has little to 'synergize' with sorceror of any kind. But if you have taken the metamagic subtle spell, that can work well with rogues.

They had one fight - I'm going to hazard a guess that they probably aren't level 3 yet, so metamagic is not in the cards for a while.
Nonetheless, I'd also suggest sticking it out as sorcerer. Unless going for a rules exploit (you can play a fair sorcadin or sorlock too, not saying it's all bad) sorcerers tend to really suffer from multiclassing, and it's better to at least get that first ASI under your belt before multiclassing anyway. And play what you want to play. Have a little faith in your DM. ;) If they're going to add an NPC to make things easier, they're obviously already on the case and tryingto make the campaign better for your specific party.

Out of all of the Sorcerer subclasses, the two newest ones are pretty powerful compared to the others. But really, as others have said, trust your DM. It’s literally their responsibility to adjust things to the party at their table. (And besides, if combat wasn’t a challenge then there wouldn’t be much point.)

I agree, but if there were Sorcerer wouldn't be it. ;)
