Couldn't you just buy a bunch of boomerang's and go around and pick up the ones that didn't return after the fight? Like people (theoretically) do with their arrows?

You only get half your ammo (Arrows, Crossbow Bolts, Sling Bullets), but thrown weapons you should get them all back, or at least most of them.
Well boomerangs that miss return to thrower. So right there you’d be only losing half of what didn’t miss...
I’d say less that that, personally, since your not losing any that just flew who knows where, you’d only be losing those that broke for some reason or got carried away or some such. Otherwise you’d have a really good idea of where the ones that hit fell and they’d be easier to find. *shrug*
Much would depends on what rules and such your particular DM enforces, bothers with, etc...

As I said right above ya... Boomerangs that miss return to the thrower. So even by the "you lose half" rule, you are only losing half of what hit.
If I was DM, I would modify the 1/2 rule for boomerangs due to this. Not only are you not losing the misses, but you should have a really good idea of where the hits landed, since you have a good idea where the targets were. So I think biggest concern would be breakage more than loss...

Ammunition. You can use a weapon that has the ammunition property to make a ranged attack only if you have ammunition to fire from the weapon. Each time you attack with the weapon, you expend one piece of ammunition. Drawing the ammunition from a quiver, case, or other container is part of the attack (you need a free hand to load a one-handed weapon). At the end of the battle, you can recover half your expended ammunition by taking a minute to search the battlefield.
If you use a weapon that has the ammunition property to make a melee attack, you treat the weapon as an improvised weapon (see "Improvised Weapons" later in the section). A sling must be loaded to deal any damage when used in this way.
I think rogue is definitely the way to go. You wouldn't want to go a fighter or anything like that because the damage is only 1d4. With a rogue, that small damage die is offset by having sneak attack dice. Trouble is that the only reason to take artificer is to get the returning weapon. Maybe you could talk to your DM about other ways to get it.

Battle Master Fighter would add some nice touches to that, but you would have to go 3-5 levels of Fighter to make it worthwhile. Artificer...? Yeah, maybe just ask the DM for a pair of Returning Boomerangs.
Hi,
i‘m work on my next Char. I‘d like to use the Boomerang as mainweapon.
My Idea is, to take two level of Artificer for Returning Weapon and 18 Level into scout rogue for Sneak DMG.
My DM allow me only two classes for multiclassing.
Do you have better ideas for me?
Instead of rogue you could go battlemaster fighter for more attacks and maneuvers. Ranger would work with it as well, as it is a ranged weapon.
Honestly though, an artificer/rogue sounds fun to play.

This should be possible
You only get half your ammo (Arrows, Crossbow Bolts, Sling Bullets), but thrown weapons you should get them all back, or at least most of them.

The problems with the "pick them up" is that 50% break, and also all magical ammunition ceases to be magical after 1 use.
Not sure if that would apply to a boomerang, up to the creator I assume.

I may have misread something but you don't loose half of your thrown weapons after a fight (unless you run away that is).

I think the “loose half” only applies to ammunition like arrows, not thrown weapons.
