Kotath is right. 2nd edition you lost levels. 3rd edition you gained a negative level, 5th edition, the worst they do to you is lose Max Hp

If the DM says you lost a level, you lost a level. Greater Restoration might work, Wish would work. Gaining more XP will work. Otherwise, ask your DM.
