Just to point out if you and a group of friends want to try out the game you can act as DM without the core books. I would recommend getting a pre published short adventure which is targeted at new DMs, these will talk you through how to do things.
An example of such an adventure is the masters vault available free on roll 20. For something longer you can run lost mine of Phandelver without any other sourcebooks.
The core books consist of the player handbook which opens up a lot more player options than are in the basic rules, it also provides insight into a D&D world that many adventures are held in. The DM guide gives advice on creating a world and how to handle different situation while the monster manual gives your party a wider variety of creatures to encounter.
yes. the Basic rules are free, which are all you need. it can be easier and more fun if you buy stuff, but you totally dont need to. if your new, I'd advise trying to find a free premade campaign, because it can be fairly hard for first time players to make a campaign of their own.
