Hi all! I am currently making a monk subclass that is based around characters from the anime Fire Force. Currently, I have it to where it can cast spells but only to 4th level. How do I make it to where it can go all the way to 9th level?
If you are using the homebrew builder here, I do not know if you can. Monks are martial classes, and most martial classes cannot cast higher than 4th or 5th level spells (looking at the way of the 4 elements monk or eldritch knight fighter). The only characters that usually get 9th level spells are full casters, so it is unlikely the tools are in place to give them to monks.
Have you looked at the Way of the Four Elements Monk? It feels to me like this could scratch the itch that you are looking for for adapting Fire Force. A Light Domain Cleric may be a good choice as well. The Four Elements Monk is not very popular and considered by many to be flawed in design in one way or another. There are many threads on D&D Beyond which suggest small or large changes to improve its play. Otherwise you may find you like its design as it is. Either way, it is worth looking over

You cannot. Only full-caster classes (and full-caster equivalents) including Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, Warlock and Wizard can cast spells above 5th-level, nor even half-caster classes like the Artificer, Paladin, and Ranger can exceed 5th-level spells. Any subclass you make for Barbarians, Fighters, Monks, or Rogues will only be a “third-caster subclass” and be able to cast spells up to 4th level with spell slots. I explain it in more detail here:
