Caveat: very much new to D&D but I've been doing a lot of reading and searching and can't figure out if this is a "thing" or not. :)
In general I'm wondering if there are magic items that gain attributes/bonuses/etc when combined with, or equipped simultaneously with, other items? A silly example might be a magic hammer that gains specific effects when used with a specific set of magic gloves? Or piece of armor that gives a certain defense bonus alone but if the whole set is equipped, give a larger bonus?
Mostly I'm asking because I have an idea for an item my character has that seems more or less normal, if a bit odd, but would like to - over the course of one or more campaigns, give them the opportunity to discover that if they find and use other items to "complete" the item it reveals itself to be magical and gains much more effect. I guess I can just work it out with my DM but I thought I'd ask as I'd like to be able to work within existing frameworks as much as possible...
Can't see those but I imagine so (edit: googled it and... ew :D ).
I'm also also starting to think about a scenario like:
magic item A - good but not great
magic item B - good but not great
Add B to A - A is now "Super A" and B is consumed ("The amulet glows with a cool white light, then melts and flows into the grooves of <item>, climbing the handle to become a gleaming filigree. <Item> pulses with power before the light fades, but the silver tracery remains. <Item> now carries an ominous aura...")
Holy crap it takes 3 attunement slots for a +1 weapon with +4 strength? That's got to be the worst item in existence. The concept of pairing magic items as a "set bonus" is super cool though

+4 above whatever the belt gives you, so the minimum at that point would be a 25 Strength. And if you're fighting giants, the 'save or die' on a crit is pretty damn good

No, only 2 slots. It says you have to be “wearing” both the gauntlets and the belt, it doesn’t specify you have to be attuned to all three.

Indeed! That’s interesting, thanks!
The hand of vecna and eye of vecna probably count, right?

Would Orrery of the Wanderer count?
