There are surely a couple threads like these, but from what I saw, I they were either outdated or simply not what I was looking for....

A few months ago, I tried to hide the true race of my character (Dhampir) so the other players in the campaign wouldn't be able to see it as easily.
I therefor created an Homebrew Half-Orc race with a Dhampir sub-race. It worked out fine, mostly.


Now, I wanted to create a real homebrewed race, and I believe I did mostly the same as far as I remember. 
The thing is, I can't add my subrace to my homebrewed race.
Yes, I checked the "has subrace" box, no I didn't submit/publish the race yet.
I set the Human Race Group for both.
When trying to add a subrace I can only create a totally new one, and not add an already created one.

Am I imagining things it it was never possible to add a created one, or not?

You cannot add a preexisting subrace to a new race, no. You must recreate the subrace attached to the new race.

But this would mean you can't use a template which kind of would make the feature, to make a subrace/variant race with a template, kinda redundant...



In older posts, people mentioned adding subraces to the race, sometimes it wasn't listed, maybe they meantduring character creation?

You could use an Elf subrace as a template to make another Elf subrace, but that’s it. That’s what the templates are for.
