I've been working on a cantrip for a homebrew subrace, and looked at a few cantrips (Firebolt, Toll the Dead, Chromatic Orb) to get an idea of how to make it function. It scales properly with levels (in this case, increasing the damage die at certain levels) and does appear correctly as an attack action on the character sheet.
For some reason, I can't get the spell to add the Spellcasting Ability Modifier of a character to the roll. It currently only seems to add the proficiency bonus, which no other spell I can find seems to do. I've tried checking "Use Primary Stat" which does not work, though I didn't expect it to as none of the other spells I looked at use it either. I'd like it to function regardless of the class chosen with the subrace. Any ideas?
It currently is set up as Damage - Bludgeoning - 1- d4 on the spell itself.
EDITED:
Just tested adding the spell to another character, and the modifiers are adding correctly. It must be an issue with the subrace, which has a trait that adds the spell as a known spell. I also have it now set to allow ranged spell attacks with the spell which has had no effect. I'm at a loss there.
When adding the spell to the trait or as a trait option ,which I ultimately did, you need to choose one Ability Modifier from the drop down of the same name. This becomes the spells spellcasting ability modifier once it's on your character sheet.
For my purposes, I ended up creating a set of 3 options where the player can choose charisma, intelligence, or wisdom (wrapped in lore) as the ability that fuels the cantrip.
perhaps if you're gunna explain how to do something, you don't use random off the cuff words and maybe even idk use the names of the fields? Hey guys if you have this problem too all you have to do is fix it. how? i just told you, you fix it. simple enough glad to help, bye!
Hello all, first time poster!

Solved this one.
