Hey y'all, I'd like to start off by saying I don't homebrew much, only the odd item or two, maybe a spell here and there.
For my upcoming campaign, one of my players would like to play an unarmed fighter or barbarian, specifically as a Tiefling. They aren't a SUPER min-maxer, but would like to be combat viable. My solution to this is the following:
- Replacing the +1 int with a +1 str (to suit the build obviously, also makes sense as tieflings in my world are wild creatures rather than demon spawn)
- Replacing the Infernal Legacy trait with the following: Your unarmed strikes deal 1d4+ your str modifier. If your unarmed strikes already deal 1d4 or more, increase the damage die by 1 (e.g d4 to d6, d6 to d8 etc).
Does that unarmed trait seem too strong? I also considered saying to roll an extra die whenever you hit with an unarmed strike instead (instead of increasing the die size). What do y'all think? Any help would be appreciated.

Incrementing the die size should be fine, but it will be difficult to implement on DDB. It would be much easier to add a d4 as a separate die roll. However, adding a d4 to every unarmed strike that will add up to a wackton of extra damage for a fighter at higher levels since they get so many attacks. It wouldn’t be such a problem if they go barbarian instead though, but still, it’s better to design for every situation instead. What I might recommend instead is to let them make an unarmed strike as a bonus action if they take the Attack action on their turn. Since they’re likely to take the Unarmed Fighting fighting style, that’ll be an extra 1d6/8+Str every turn.
Sure thing. In retrospect, simply adding 1d4 to every unarmed strike shouldn’t be too much of a problem by the levels where it’s gonna make a difference. One thing I will suggest though is to have the unarmed strikes start to count as magical starting at 5th level.
