I have a kitsune race I'm trying to finish. Since they are pranksters for the most part what I wanted to do is as she goes up in levels every two levels they get a new tail that allows them to cast one spell of the enchantment or illusion school once per tail per long rest or day. Example first tail gets one level one spell for the second it just adds a second level spell of the class. So at the second tail they would have one level one and one level two and so on up to the ninth tail at level 17. Only thing I cant figure out it how to add it to my homebrew race so that they not only get the right spell level but also get to choose the spell for it when it recharges incase the player wants to change it when it recharges
Alright, so. What you wanna accomplish is a l’il complicated, but doable. I’ma just point out though that it’s ridiculously overpowered, blowing every other race out of the water, especially from 5th onwards, especially at higher levels when they would get 7th-, 8th-, and 9th-level spells. But if you don’t mind that power level for your race I’ll tell you how to accomplish it.
I suppose maybe it maybe I thought the 5th level spell would not come until they are lv 9 maybe 10 and it has to be just illusion or enchantment only. They don't even get the 9th one untill level 17at least may even make it every 3 for the first few and when I have to get the last few every two. Even if it is I would love to know how to add it.
Considering that a 20th level full spellcaster can only cast 1 8th-level and 1 9th-level spell per long rest…. And that he highest level spell that any official race grants is 2nd-level, and that the highest character level any race grants traits up to is 5th…. Yeah, I’d say it’s pretty busted.
Anyway, where you attach a spell to the racial trait, one of the fields is labeled “available at character level.” That field dictates when they would gain the relevant spell (tail). You can simply follow the instructions in the Homebrew Subclasses & Species FAQ #s 14 & 15 for all the information you should need to set up the choice of a spell. You would have to “Add A Spell” for each tail: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/131411-a-homebrewers-how-to-faq).
