So, first of all, if I have a campaign and you are in it, don’t look at this thread. Thanks!
Now, to the question. I was thinking of a BBEG for a Shadowfell campaign of mine, and I wanted to prove this creature was powerful. So I looked at an Adult a Shadow Dragon and decided, since we want this to be an end-game creature, let’s pump this up. Now, I need some help. What CR would this creature be?
For Lore reasons, i’d Like him to have 3 different breath attack’s, the one of a Blue, Silver, and Black Dragon. I’d also like him to have the Health of an Ancient Back Dragon, and the rest of the traits (besides the breath weapons) of a Shadow Dragon. What CR would that be? If it’s too much, what could I do to balance it? And if you figure out the CR, could you teach me how to do that in the future?
If you apply the shadow dragon template (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/mm/monsters-d#DragonShadow) to an ancient black Dragon the resulting monster is of about CR24. The additional breath options don't adjust CR much if it can only use 1 breath at a time. If you give it any additional actions or legendary actions, it may raise its CR.
If you’re looking to calculate the CR on your own, I suggest looking at the DMG’s Creating a Monster section as that has an in-depth description of how to calculate the CR.

Haven’t used this account in forever. Still a big fan of crawling claws.
