While updating my homebrew subrace of Aarakocra, I noticed after creating a newer version (just balancing things better after a lil feedback and fixing a few typos etc) I noticed that on my display order my character had updated. As well as seeing previous edits being marked as "previous editions"...
That is because they are previous editions. You would have to take the old version off of the character and replace it with the new version. That is just one of the many, many very excellent reasons to not publish your homebrews until all of them at editing is done.
Well thanks...I think? I mean it was prioritising the oldest version rather than the other updated version first was probably what caused my initial confusion, that and having a system that runs by doing so with going in, then finding and deselecting older versions rather than allowing creators to simply update them.
Also lil passive aggressive there dude, may want to work on that. 👌

As long as the homebrew is not published, any changes you make are automatically applied to that version, and everything does automatically update just like you expected. Once published, it is locked in and can no longer be altered. That is because people could add it to their collections and they might not want any changes to be applied to it. So instead, DDB allows us to make a completely new version and the old version becomes archived, much like older UA stuff becomes archived when a new version comes out.
Any character that already has something like a subclass applied when that something becomes archived, retains the archived version since that was what the player chose. If the player wishes to update to the new version, they must do it themselves. That’s because if DDB started making those decisions for us there would be far far more complaints about that than there are about this. It’s a “lesser of two evils” kinda deal.
As a side note, I in no way had any intention of any passive aggressiveness whatsoever. I have been warning people for well over a year now to hold off on publishing until all playtesting and editing is complete to help save them from having to deal with issues like this. I made those same mistakes, and really wish someone had taken a moment to warn me about the side effects of re-publishing. Trust me, there are more, and they are also annoying. Any one of them is not that annoying, but when one has to deal with all of them in various different ways in different parts of the site, it can grow from a baby little annoying to actually gorram adolescent frustration. That is until one discovers all of the various workarounds and tricks. (To be honest, if one homebrews enough it can either become even more than frustrating, or else one simply becomes inured to the whole thing.)
I was legitimately trying to be helpful by warning you and anyone else who might read this post to expect other... “minor annoyances” caused by re-publishing. I was trying to live up to the golden rule of “do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” I wish someone had taken the time to warn me a year and a half ago, I would not have been so hasty to publish, and had to re-re-re-publish a bunch of stuff. 🙄 So, for over a year now, I have made it a kinda mission to warn people about this stuff so that they can at least make an informed decision about publishing instead of making the decision to publish with no heads up at all like I did. Admittedly, after having given the same warnings about the same side effects what feels like hundreds of times, I have truncated the language to save myself some time. Perhaps that was the source of the miscommunication between us as to my tone. 🤔
So, I apologize if you took any offense, and I’ll take your advice to “work on that.” Hopefully this longer explanation has been better received.
And as a side note, you must not have read very many of my posts. If you had, you would likely be better able to detect when I actually am being “snarky,” “condescending,” or in this case “passive aggressive.” Because when I am, I guarantee that there’s no “li’l” about it. It is just full on, in people’s faces, and very fecking recognizable. I rarely make apologies in those circumstances as I don’t usually take such a tone without feeling justified. Every once in a while I get caught on a bad day, and I do apologize for those occasions. (Okay, I must admit that in a more conversational forum where active debate is going on, I can get a bit snarky etc. However, this is a more serious forum where I specifically come to help as many people as I possibly can with whatever problems they have for which I might have an answer or solution.) When I type “I hope that helps” I do genuinely mean it. If I had been passive aggressive it would have come out more like “I do ever so hope that was helpful in some conceivable way.” (Note the difference?)

Any help on this would be much appreciated.
