Hey, I'm trying to create a variant Half-Elf race for a campaign, but I'm having some trouble figuring out the variant homebrew creation.  All I want to do is restrict the Ability Score Bonus to only the +2 to Charisma and replace the Fey Ancestry trait with the ability to select a feat.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure if you can add a feat to a homebrew race, or at least I can't find the area to do so.  Does anyone know how to do this?  Are there updated instructions anywhere on the site about how to create a variant race?  It seems the current docs are quite out of date.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

It’s totally doable. When you make a variant race, you can designate that each feature you add to the variant replaces a feature on the original. So create a feature for the +2 Cha, and designate it to replace the normal Ability Bonus feature. Then create a second feature designated to replace Fey Ancestry, and add the following modifier:

Modifier: Feat->Subtype: Choose a Feat

Thanks, IamSposta!    The Ability Score Modifier worked, but for some reason, the Feat won't appear on the racial trait selection screen.  I used the Modifier setup you listed in your response.  Any ideas what the issue might be?  Thanks again!

Did you designate that it replaces Fey Ancestry? After you added that feature, did you re-save the whole homebrew using the main [SAVE CHANGES] button? Did you give it some time for the server to do its thing so the character builder could catch up?

I have set up the replacement and saved everything, but the feat doesn't show up.  I took some screenshots (below) to look over in case I've missed a setting.  Please let me know your thoughts.  Thanks!

Wait a minute, is this part of an “option,” or just a regular feature?!? The “choose a [whatever]” modifier subtypes don’t work when they are added as part of an option, only as part of the main feature.

I’m not sure. You might not have, it might be a limitation of the software. 

The last things I can suggest you try are to re-save the whole variant race again using the main [SAVE CHANGES] button under Basic Information. Then log out, log back in, wait 20 minutes, and then try it again on a brand new character sheet. If it still isn’t working, I don’t know what else to suggest.

At that point you’re gonna need a Staffer or Mod to look at it for you, as a regular user there is only so much help I can give you to troubleshoot stuff. Sorry I can’t help more on this issue.
