My DM wants me to setup a modified Message spell that includes a duration of 10 minutes per character level the PC is on. I am hoping that I can have the Duration of the spell in the Character Sheet show the current character level duration (e.g. L7 70 minutes).
Thus far I have checked At Higher Level Scaling? and chosen Character Level for Higher Level Scaling Type.
In the Edit the Higher Level page I have created a row like this:
There is no Modifier for Duration, hence this column is empty.
This is not delivering results. The Extended Duration row appears in the spell in the character sheet but is blank - the PC is L7.
Given there is an option for character level in Higher Level Scaling Type, and Extended Duration in the Higher Level page, there must be a way to achieve this, right?
Character level only works for Cantrips, not leveled spells. Only for leveled spells can you add a single “at higher level” that is designated to do something “every level.” For Cantrips, you have to manually enter what happens at each character level.
To that end, you would need to set the initial duration for 10 mins. Then, you would need to add 19 “at higher levels,” one for each additional character level, and increase the duration for each of them by 10 minutes.
So one of them would require this:
Scaling Level Value: 2
Scale Effect: Extended Duration
Details: 20 minutes
And the next would require:
Scaling Level Value: 3
Scale Effect: Extended Duration
Details: 30 minutes
All to he way until you get to:
Scaling Level Value: 20
Scale Effect: Extended Duration
Details: 3 hours, 20 minutes
Test it with the first 3-4 levels to make sure it’s working correctly before doing all the way to level 20 just to be on the safe side. (Yes, I’m pretty sure you can skip “Fixed Value completely, but just in case that’s part of why I’m recommending you check after the first few levels.)
Remember, after adding or adjusting anything to always re-save the entire homebrew when you’re done using the main [SAVE CHANGES] button so the system can know to police those changes up. And be patient, it can take a few minutes for changes to get pushed through to character sheets that are already using those homebrews, at most up to 20 minutes. So if it doesn’t happen immediately just sit the forums for a minute or something and check back and it’ll usually be there.
You have to designate the duration as “special.” The actual duration itself won’t change, but when done correctly, it will list that the “special” duration increases. Like the Quen Sign spell on this character lists it:
Applying Special as the Duration Type, and as the At Higher Levels Scale Type, the Duration in the character sheet says, "Duration: Special 10 minutes", regardless of the character level. Is there any way I can share the spell with this forum directly, to simplify this back-and-forth?
In the At Higher Levels section, choose Extended Duration in the Type column as normal, enter the extended time (not sure if this does anything), but importantly, enter a description. As a result in the character sheet spell info there will be an Extended Duration row and it will show the description. For level 7 I enter the description "70 minutes". Now in the character sheet the spell shows a line stating: Extended Duration: 70 Minutes.

I hope that helps.

Thanks,
I made the changes below - the character is L8.
But there's nothing in Extended Duration?
You have to designate the duration as “special.” The actual duration itself won’t change, but when done correctly, it will list that the “special” duration increases. Like the Quen Sign spell on this character lists it:

Did this for all the levels and works.
Thanks, IamSposta.
Yes, you had to add the “details.” I’m glad it worked.
Happy to help.
