Mine was 1978. A friend of mine had got the Keep on the Borderlands for Christmas and the Players Handbook. My Magic User was killed in the first encounter by the first arrow. 5 years later, I had a 17th level month (with psionic ability)(with enough xp for 20th level) with a castle, and a dozen 15+ leve Magic Users, similar number of high level Clerics, some high level Thiefs, 4 Generals/Fighters with an army of some 5000 men. Made up of various numbers of all classes. Also had some 200 monks of various levels. Had about 100 Dwarves operating a gold and silver mine, some Drow, as well as hundreds of personnel to support the endeavor. Owned some 5000 acres as well. Made everything we were allowed to by TSR in the end, although I had collected hundreds of magic items from the campaigns we played every weekend. Must have talked to them 500 times on the phone. I have entered the Monk in to this site after getting an okay. It was created by a TSR employee at a hobby shop he was visiting in Lansing, Mi. in 1979. Actually had a letter verifying the numbers were what he rolled because people complained. The whole character was about 20 pages long, but most of it I can't enter in here, though I would like to. May try to play the monk again if he can be imported in to a campaign. it is interesting to see some ideas about abilities, spells, races, etc. talked about all those years ago now in the game.
It was actually only a couple years ago, playing a 5e homebrew game. My character was a bronze dragonborn paladin of Ilmater who'd been living on the streets until his god called him to serve. He was still new to being a paladin when the plot started happening, and did his best to adjust and keep up. I miss playing him.
Generic Fighter from the original Red Box D&D released in the mid-80's. I don't remember much about him, save that he was absolutely out to get the magic user Bargle after he killed a friend of his with a single magic missile. Good times!

Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you
Once in a homebrewed Campaign, my Human ( variant ) wizard lvl 5 entered a dungeon with a gnome who had a low Cha. Then I realised I had no more torches left to continue exploring the dungeon, and suddendly the Gnome had the worst cha saving throw, lefting me alone there ( because he panicked and ran to the outside ). I decided to continue going down by the dungeon a few meters more. And then, the DM said: Roll a Dexterity saving throw.I rolled a low dexterity score, causing me to fall down on a deepest well, alone..............
I was just 11-12 it wasn't too long ago, I am pretty sure it was 2017. My brother who was 10-11 and amazingly found out about D&D before I did, my dad had played D&D since when he was at uni, the 1980s. We started a party with the entire family (except mum) and I played as a Paladin 1 High Elf named Tharivol. We played the Lost Mine Of Phandelver and I definitely thought it was the best pre-made campaign. I eventually got robbed by my brother who played as a Lawful Evil Warlock. I then went on to 5+ campaigns with my 2 younger and 1 older brothers and sister.
It was '83, I was 12 and it was an after school club DM'd by one of the teachers. My character was "Paladin" because I couldn't come up with a name I was in love with. We played once a week. I think Tuesdays? It obviously broke up at the end of the school year...

We're doing one small murder-y thing for a bigger, better reason. The ends justify the means.
My first character was an EK who learned a very valuable lesson early on (He died first session): DON'T PROTECT THE MURDER HOBO!!! He died fighting a boss that the murder hobo engaged four levels early (He was supposed to be a recurring character, murder hobo and I died, but I think he still will be). Character #2 (Also my current character): Closer to slapping the murder hobo's new guy than saving him, even though I'm NG when #1 was CN/CG. IRL though, the murder hobo is great guy.
first charater i played was an wood elf druid in the middle of an midlife crisis who wants to collect all knoeledge
later to be converted into an high elf wizard once i figured out that was more appropriate
my first idea for a dnd character was an bunny, but that was before i knew really anything about the rules so it does not count
first character i played for more than one session was an halfling barbarian riding a mule, prince sam of the hermit kingdom and his steed sir stewart the bastard

i am soup, with too many ideas (all of them very spicy) who has made sufficient homebrew material and character to last an thousand human lifetimes
My first idea for a dnd character was a bunny, but that was before i knew really anything about the rules so it does not count.
Man, you had the same idea as I had in 1986 or what ??
I wanted to be the bunny that appears in Alice in Wonderland. Woow.... I wanted something like the Halflings race but, I wanted to use a bunny race. Then become a Bard or a Sorcerer.
My ideas just went to the trashbasket when I realised D&D 1st edition didn't had more races.... Dang !!
It's been really fun reading through this thread! Kind of surprised this was the first time I noticed it. I'm actually going to revisit some of these stories for homebrew campaign content :) Sorry, kind of like facebook I just sucked up everything you posted and made it my own!!!! MWahahahaha!
The first character I do remember was one I played somewhere around 1987-88, so I had 5 years of characters that just weren't that memorable. Kind of sad now that I think on it. Anyway, it was a wizard called Professor X and I had this awesome binder with all the spell cards so I would add them to my prepared spells for each game. The campaign was pretty much killing the Lich the on the mountain. So we were facing a lot of undead. There was also a custom magic item in the game that could store souls. Basically kind of like a different for resurrection so you could come back as yourself. That I happened to be holding while our Cleric died. Mortal enemy of the undead. Basically were screwed without the cleric so I proposed I store his soul in the gem and since we had nothing else to resurrect him in... lets use a skeleton! The Dm was basically like, yeah, you're crazy and I'm pretty sure the cleric wouldn't be happy to be resurrected as a skeleton but hey, just for kicks, I'll give you a 2% chance, choose low or high. (remember when we used 1d100?) I chose high and rolled a 99. So the DM worked up this whole custom cleric in a skeleton body... Good times!
My first character is now a high elf necromancer villain in all of my games. (Not a main villain, just there in the background if the players want to kill him)

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
My first character was a human ranger named Bob. I made him in 5 minutes because my friends were playing a game. Bob lasted for about half a session before getting killed by a goblin. At the time, I didn't really understand how to play at all, and Bob had no backstory. As a little Easter egg, I put Bob in an insignificant role in every game I run.
