How much player engagement went into the development of your setting?
That is, how much of your setting did players have input into the development?
When I develop a new setting, I ask my players what they want to see.
Nothing is off the table. I usually have a vague idea of what I want to do, but not much beyond that. I always try to bring something of what they suggest into the setting.
Then I ask them more stuff.
My goal is to make it all fit together, to all work together, and it is there that my ability to create stuff comes in. For example, I was asked to create an Amazon society that is opposed to a deeply patriarchal society. I was asked to have Romans and some kind of Japanese stuff. I was asked for a robot maid, lol.
They give me the what. My role is the why and how. This last round had a bunch of suggestions from anime and urban paranormal fiction.
I don't include everything, from the later rounds -- an example of that being werewolves and vampires. They are not warm and cuddly and cannot be so -- they are monsters. We've done the warm and cuddly stuff.
My thoughts are important as well, mind you. I add in things that I want (like sacred magical springs). But I have found that bringing my players into things means they become more invested in the world -- and sometimes they aren't happy with what I did with their idea ("I want bridge trolls!"), while other times they are very happy (robot maids).
History often comes from me entirely -- but not always. The idea of the God's War came from one thing. THe approach to religion ( use is a way to solve a separate request about Gods. But the history is simple -- and the legends and myths always include things from the past games we hav played, shifted slightly to fit into the world.
Perhaps the scariest thing about me is that when I say nothing is off the table, that includes jokes. I did one game where the best armor possible was a chainmail bikini. I don't mean magical, I mean normal armor. Second best was a chainmail loincloth.
personally, I think of it as being about half. My players say it is about 5%, because I take their ideas as the foundations, and then I find ways to connect them, to provide justification for them, and to establish a basis for them in the setting.

I’m currently a player, but there’s been lots. I’m not going to count the world-changing things we did, like a previous party installing a new emperor, since that’s not building the world, I don’t think. But, the BBEG of the current campaign was a PC in a campaign 2-3 campaigns ago, who did some really jerky stuff and it’s now coming to a head. We had a character that wanted to be from a magic school, and over time, that school has become a globe-spanning organization that’s part school, part embassy for the country it’s based on, part spy organization. I had a character with a knight of the order background, and voila, a knightly order was born around how my character behaved. One player’s off-handed joking comment in session 1 of a current campaign changed the world lore to fit so the comment was true — it actually made for a better story, so the DM went with it. In a previous campaign, the whole party were members of the same family, a once rich family of traders that had fallen onto hard times. We wrote up a backstory of what had happened to them (over a few hundred years) and that became true. There’s lots of others.
And on a smaller scale, countless NPCs of both great and small import to the world have come from character backstories.

I tend to add things that seems to create memorable things from my players. For example, in the Off Week game (as I call it) - one of the players was talking about getting a bath, and he wanted a rubber ducky. So I actually made a homebrew called Rubber Ducky of Inspiration. If he squeaks it on initiative, he gets advantage (which is very beneficial for him as a rogue) - but I can't count how many times he has forgotten to squeeze it.
In my regular work game, I created a creature called sand sharks (no, not like normal sand sharks!) - but sharks that swim through the sand as easy as normal sharks swim through water. (The monster was originally from Star Frontiers). Well, these creatures are very, very, very lethal (having half to full cover frequently when they dive into the sand, advantage on anyone who isn't at full HP from blood frenzy, etc etc) - well, there was an encounter the party was fighting sand giants (inspired by the Sand Giants of EverQuest) and the blood being spilled attracted sand sharks. They watched the sand sharks devour two giants, who'd been slain out of the four, as they headed for stone areas to stand on to avoid the sand sharks, and one of the players asked, "How much can those things eat before they get full?" One of the others said, "Their gullets are like bags of holding."
So it became cannon that the gullets of sand sharks are required to make bags of holding, thus making them rare, due to the dangerous task of hunting sand sharks.
There's so much more I can't even think of off the top of my head that's been influenced by my players. I love doing that kind of stuff because it shows that they're a part of the creation process and they get to really feel like they're a part of it all.

A lot of the campaigns I have been in are official modules with established lore. I have always been allowed to make up whatever I want as long as it is related to my character. The DM of the post-apocalyptic campaign I am in right now has said he is willing to let players add some to the world, but my character doesn’t have a lot of connections to the world and is one of those naive explorers, so I haven’t taken him up on his offer yet.

Not a whole lot. I don’t think most of my players are invested enough in the game to work on a setting. I think it would be cool to work together with them though.

As the perpetual DM, this is too rare. The ones where I am a player... I played in Storm King's Thunder and joined a few sessions after it'd started (my former boss' friends, none of whom, I actually knew at the time), so I was pretty reserved in that game (which is odd, if you know much I ramble...) - because most of their characters seemed to have pretty tight ties to the game and also knew each other very well (having all grown up together). But they were all extremely welcoming as players. Probably the friendliest set of people I've had the good graces to meet! So for Storm King's Thunder, I didn't add much. The next campaign we began after that was the Dragonlance one (and I am very, very, very familiar and in love with the Dragonlance book series) - my DM allowed me to make a Mage with family ties to Solmnia and said I could be proficient with a blade (which I passed on, since I took up the spell Magic Weapon for when I need to use the sword). But that campaign is only like five or six sessions in (won't say where we are in case others are playing). So not much chance to do much, and with set campaigns I feel like there rarely is. The other game I am a player in is Curse of Strahd and that one - we as a party - are kind of all over the place. We are the definition of a train wreck I feel like. I think part of it is we play every other Sunday and some Sundays we don't (for whatever reason) - and between me running like five games of my own as a DM, playing in the Dragonlance one, the DM in that game often expects the players to be able to recap events - which can be chaotic when it can be weeks before we play and trying to remember.
This is why, a week or so ago, I asked about "Who should keep notes? The DM or the players?"
I've been keeping very loose and often silly notes in the Discord channel we play in. I do it on purpose, because in the games I run, it's like an entire page or two of summaries, with cool moments that happened, if any... So, I feel like I am always taking notes. So I take them from my character's perspective to encourage others to do their own notes. Not just always rely on me. :D
My character's name in this is Talarys (Calam is another play as is Asuna, Yondu and Amaranth)... the notes are vague enough that there's no way there's spoilers for CoS game. lol
Casmir is a jerk, apparently. Asuna was buried under the golem; however, when Talarys dug up the golem's remains, Asuna wasn't there Moved on, went into a room (Talarys the door kicker) - and... Fight ghouls Talarys opens a crypt thing - he hears voices in his head Accept this dark gift and your legs will be much more effecient Yondu accepted one offer; lost his teeth Yondu accepted a second offer, his left forearm - an extra eye forms (but it's currently closed) He accepted the third gift too, and Talarys feels sick SUPPOSEDLY Yondu isn't evil from all this I have my doubts (Talarys the door kicker) We go in fight some wolves (Talarys the door kicker) Then fight some flaming skulls During the fight Calam casts Mass Suggestion on them and Talarys to say we're all friends They pass, Talarys fails Calam is Talarys' best friend Calam believes Talarys can do it They fight the skulls and win (Hooray! Calam was right!) We leave the charred body and go to the room up north Illusion of food in the room Head south, Yondu finds a staff on the corpse (uses Mage Hand to put it in the bag) Calam picks it up - and maybe we give it to Asuna? - there's some kind of magic about it Retreated back to one of the secret rooms Yondu casts Mordenkainen's Private Sanctum and makes it foggy As Calam sleeps he has terrible nightmares, he does not get the benefit of a long rest It's now 5pm
That’s one of the problems with official modules, there’s not a lot of room for creativity compared to a DM made adventure in a homebrewed setting. But even still, there’s room to invent stuff and add it to the world. For example, in one of the PbP campaigns I’m in, my character has the Urchin background. So I invented an orphanage and named the 3 NPCs who run it and even fleshed them out to an extent (they’re a polyamorous hin [halfling] thruppe), and they also run a catering gig as a way to help give the orphans in their care a marketable skill to use in their adulthoods. And I’ve come up with various foods (candies, delicacies, etc.) that exist in her hometown too. And I’m not the only one, one of the other players regularly adds stuff too. It’s become a real group project, and I feel more connected to the campaign and the world as a result.

That happens sometimes. If you really want to play, why not DM a game yourself? That’s how most of us got started, nobody else was willing to do the job. (I’m somewhat of an exception to that rule.)

Accurate. For the Dragonlance campaign (because among the six players, myself and one other are familiar with the novels, the others are not but have been avid D&D Players since like 2nd edition). And the other knowledgable player is playing a bard and when I said I was going to play a Mage and go for White Robes (good mages in Dragonlance) he said (out of character) he was going to keep an eye on me and make sure I don't shift to Black Robes (evil wizards in Dragonlance). So I asked Paul if I could have a trinket that allows me to see the Black Moon (normally invisible unless you're of the Black Robes) - so that way, in character, I could keep making references to the Black Moon's location in the stars (constellations play a heavy role in Dragonlance) called "Trinket to see Nuitari." What's interesting is I am not sure why he thinks I'd turn (in Storm King's Thunder I played a squire who took the place of his knight, who died defending him) - and was very good aligned. So it's not like I have a history of turning evil. But this has been a fun element to inject. Each time we can, I will have my character look through the trinket and say, "Nuitari's eye is upon us. He watches and calculates." lol

Why not count phps? It's still a valid way of playing D&D. Playing D&D via Discord, for example, doesn't rule out playing D&D because we weren't all sitting in the same room. If you're engaged in some form of D&D, whether in person, play by post, pbem (play by email), Discord, in person, roll20, whatever the case may be - I'd definitely say it all counts!

That happens sometimes. If you really want to play, why not DM a game yourself? That’s how most of us got started, nobody else was willing to do the job. (I’m somewhat of an exception to that rule.)
No lies detected. This is why in my answer to this I said I am the perpetual DM. I started as a player, immensely enjoyed it - got the rules books. Began running my own games (and back then, it was 2nd edition, so it was pretty much - "You go into a dungeon - roll initiative! You won? What room do you in? Left? Bugbears leap out! Roll initiative!" LOL It was very, very, very, very basic. I have grown a million fold through the many, many, many years as being a DM and I am thankful for it.
You could, if you can't find people in person (local gaming shops or whatever), run it through Discord, or even here on the forums or through email. Dive in.
Today, November 12, 2023, or maybe November 13, 2023, or maybe even November 11, 2023, depending on where you live, we mourn the loss of Antonia "Wall of Text" D'orsay, who has been temporarily banned from the Dungeons and Dragons Beyond forums, seemingly due to discussion about fudging dice rolls but quite possibly due to something else. Calam picks it up - and maybe we give it to Asuna? - there's some kind of magic about it
Retreated back to one of the secret rooms
Yondu casts Mordenkainen's Private Sanctum and makes it foggy
As Calam sleeps he has terrible nightmares, he does not get the benefit of a long rest

That’s one of the problems with official modules, there’s not a lot of room for creativity compared to a DM made adventure in a homebrewed setting. But even still, there’s room to invent stuff and add it to the world. For example, in one of the PbP campaigns I’m in, my character has the Urchin background. So I invented an orphanage and named the 3 NPCs who run it and even fleshed them out to an extent (they’re a polyamorous hin [halfling] thruppe), and they also run a catering gig as a way to help give the orphans in their care a marketable skill to use in their adulthoods. And I’ve come up with various foods (candies, delicacies, etc.) that exist in her hometown too. And I’m not the only one, one of the other players regularly adds stuff too. It’s become a real group project, and I feel more connected to the campaign and the world as a result.

I keep wanting be more active in this thread but I’ve only been in 3 sessions as a player. (I don’t count pbps for this answer) I’ve had 2 DMs and and they don’t have the followthrough to continue the campaigns.
I’m inexperienced as a player but I have been reading rules and stories during my 2 years of no one I know wanting to run a campaign. :/

That happens sometimes. If you really want to play, why not DM a game yourself? That’s how most of us got started, nobody else was willing to do the job. (I’m somewhat of an exception to that rule.)

Accurate. For the Dragonlance campaign (because among the six players, myself and one other are familiar with the novels, the others are not but have been avid D&D Players since like 2nd edition). And the other knowledgable player is playing a bard and when I said I was going to play a Mage and go for White Robes (good mages in Dragonlance) he said (out of character) he was going to keep an eye on me and make sure I don't shift to Black Robes (evil wizards in Dragonlance). So I asked Paul if I could have a trinket that allows me to see the Black Moon (normally invisible unless you're of the Black Robes) - so that way, in character, I could keep making references to the Black Moon's location in the stars (constellations play a heavy role in Dragonlance) called "Trinket to see Nuitari." What's interesting is I am not sure why he thinks I'd turn (in Storm King's Thunder I played a squire who took the place of his knight, who died defending him) - and was very good aligned. So it's not like I have a history of turning evil. But this has been a fun element to inject. Each time we can, I will have my character look through the trinket and say, "Nuitari's eye is upon us. He watches and calculates." lol
Why not count phps? It's still a valid way of playing D&D. Playing D&D via Discord, for example, doesn't rule out playing D&D because we weren't all sitting in the same room. If you're engaged in some form of D&D, whether in person, play by post, pbem (play by email), Discord, in person, roll20, whatever the case may be - I'd definitely say it all counts!
No lies detected. This is why in my answer to this I said I am the perpetual DM. I started as a player, immensely enjoyed it - got the rules books. Began running my own games (and back then, it was 2nd edition, so it was pretty much - "You go into a dungeon - roll initiative! You won? What room do you in? Left? Bugbears leap out! Roll initiative!" LOL It was very, very, very, very basic. I have grown a million fold through the many, many, many years as being a DM and I am thankful for it.
You could, if you can't find people in person (local gaming shops or whatever), run it through Discord, or even here on the forums or through email. Dive in.

It’s a glitch, the Mod must have flipped most of the switches but forgot one. They’ll just extend Dorsay’s ban by the number of hours they were inadvertently not actually blocked and it all comes out to the same time “on vacation” from posting.
