QotD: Since we have quite a few people who have just started playing D&D in this thread - here's one, for everyone - what other type of RPG interests you (whether it exists or not)? Are there specific types of RPGs you wish existed (based off a TV show, movie, cartoon, etc)? Anything other than D&D. :)
I want to try World of Darkness, but I might wait till I get to college and there are more people interested in trying that.
Well, no idea what side of the coast or world you're on - but the GM I play with runs a bi-weekly World of Darkness game - although I think we're wrapping up soon. If you're one for playing on Discord, if the game comes up again after we wrap up (he tends to move on to new games to run - we ran a number of sessions in Warhammer, then wrapped that up; ran a few sessions in WoD: Hunter (the one I enjoyed the most), wrapped that up; ran WoD: Mage (that one kind of fell apart), and we're currently in WoD: Vampire, which I think he said he's close to wrapping up (which will probably mean he's gonna run a different game soon).

I know this is probably obvious coming from me, but I would love a cooking/fantasy game, possibly with horror elements. Like Toriko meets Berserk, basically. I've tried to run a game like that in the FATE system, but it's such a niche concept that very few people actually joined, and we got held up by dates and couldn't run a single session. I actually am working on an RPG like what I described, but my lack of experience means it's gonna suck in all likelihood.
The fun thing to do is create it - test it with friends - take honest feedback and keep working on it.
There are tons of games I wish I could run but realistically know I'll never find a group for. If you're not playing D&D or Pathfinder, your only option is to teach yourself the game and then teach it to others. I especially like games that focus on exploration just as much as combat, which is one of D&D's biggest failures.
Well, the question wasn't what games would you run based on success - but other RPGs you would LIKE to play or RUN, including ones that haven't been made yet (based on some TV show, movie, cartoon, whatever).
As for exploration vs combat, that's not D&D's biggest failure. That's the DM's failure. The DM can make an interesting exploration game. I am doing so in one of my bi-weekly games. Party washed ashore on an island that I, as the DM, haven't even fully mapped. I just did the outline - and as the party moves around, I create town, throw down mountains, whatever I need - but it's very much about exploring the island with combat in there. But that game (I call it it the off week game) is 90% RP and I let so many things go when the players ask, "Can I do this?" And a lot of times I leave things to chance. Player: "Is there a tree next to me?" Me: "Let's see - you're near the woods. Roll me a Nature Check, DC 10. 10 or higher there's a tree next to you." So I let all of these things shape the world/island (specifically in this case).

I want to second this. In fact, I would say I have to second this, lol -- I mean, the last four campaigns over the least decade have all essentially been exploration games, lol.
I did a Robinson Crusoe, even (so survival over exploration, but it was still a pretty big island).
The most meta game thing about Wyrlde is that fact that I am not going to say "so you have to go do this" -- story will happen as the players push it, and the kinds of stories and such will depend on the characters -- but nearly everywhere is distant from somewhere else (average distance between Towns and Cities is about 250 miles, so lots of travel and wilderness stuff). Even how the party meets is up to them (in the session immediately before the first actual game session).
The point is they have to explore the world as players. And even I don't know what they will find ;)

While I respect the DMs that do manage to make exploration enjoyable for their players, and I'll concede that it's probably not D&D's biggest failure, I have to disagree with that one. Sure, exploration is certainly doable, but the rules in the DMG are both lackluster and confusing and, in my opinion, desperately need an overhaul. I typically ignore that section entirely when I'm DMing, and make something up on the spot instead. Travel distances, miles covered at various speeds, boat travel -- it might be my limitations as a DM with less experience, but I just can't make it work. It's just all over the place and oftentimes doesn't make logical sense, so I'll just highlight a few landmarks, give players the option to explore specific sites, and then skip to the destination.

They lack, imo, a certain breadth and understanding of the way that nature works and such. As you note, doing so does require some effort.
Using the windspeed, Temperature, and Storm tables I had to develop (using Earth as a baseline) makes things a lot easier. For travel speeds and times, I just use the "Speed" rating that everything has, lol. I had to lay it all out as a kind of chart, but now I have a movement system that works and scales by time (round by round, day by day, and in between).
The biggest challenge is the whole issue of why they are out in the wilderness.

Like everything in D&D - it's more of... hold on...
... that gif explains it nicely.
D&D is handing you the basic concept. You take what you want and change what you need. "Here's how we determined boat travel works." You take it - if it works, cool - if not, change it.
Same thing with anything else - goblins are CR1 (guessing, I don't have the book in front of me) - but you're running your players who are level 8 - and want to throw some goblins at them because you love goblins - you change the goblin around, give him better chances to hit, higher HP, more damage, and there you go - you got some goblins who your party thinks are going to be push overs - and learn the hard truth that things in the world aren't always as they seem.
D&D relies heavily on imagination - both from the players (as the DM is describing things) to the DM (coming up with adventurers and stories). Definitely do not be afraid to change whatever doesn't work for you.
Especially if you're new to D&D. You will find what works with you as you play. You will find what needs to change. Gauge the players reactions to thinks - and note the things that work.
And it will be different for every group your run for D&D - so as a DM you're constantly needing to shift.
And if you ever want some advice - as you can see - this thread has some new folks and folks who have been at this forever (DM and player alike!) - so you can get all kinds of insight if you ever want to ask for some DM tips!

Thanks. And yeah, you’re right. DMing isn’t all about following things by the book, and I stray from it all the time. It’s just that I wish the book was a little more useful in that area. Tables like those AEDorsay described would be nice. Thanks again for the advice, though — it’s very much appreciated :)

Yes, my setting book, but give me a few hours and I will assemble them into a smaller pdf (life), and drop in a build up and duration table while stripping some lore.
They are early in the book — travel and environment. They work with the vehicle rules as well, in the combat rules at the back. If you grab the v.9 book.
The only thing I don’t really address is earthquakes, because the game world is stable, lol.

Shadowrun can be so much fun! I wish there was a reincarnation of Boot Hill with a better ruleset.
Question for anybody that might be familiar with the Dredd universe. Does Warlock - the alien warlock exist in the same universe?
So, the Dredd Universe is pretty much just mega city one. The primary publishing point for him is 2000 AD. That magazine has also run Nemesis the Warlock, about a demonic alien hero.
One of the same creators, but two very different times (if it is the same, then Nemesis is hundreds or thousands of years later).
most folks will think of two Marvel superhero characters when one says alien warlock, however, lol. Adam Warlock, and the New Mutant Warlock. Both are aliens.

A labyrinth RPG sounds awesome!
Thanks! The idea is that the whole world is a labyrinth, with towns, villages, and outside terrain such as jungles. You can navigate to certain rooms if you have like weird magical stuff that's tied to it, and the labyrinth is constantly changing around: Which is why you can't have multiple people in the same civilization spread over multiple rooms. There would also be tools to help generate the contents and denizens of various rooms, as well as templates and all sorts of goofy preexisting stuff.
This idea would take a ginormous amount of work and I don't think I'll start at for a while, because I'm lazy and I'm not gonna do a ****ton of work if I don't have a really large audience to spread it to.
Edit: Btw, I think it would be pretty easy to alternate DMs, play while a DM, or do a West Marches campaign with this system.

That’s awesome! Where could I get those tables? Your setting book?

I wanna try GURPs again, potentially. Pathfinder looks neat. I might give the goofy Kobold Press thing a shoot one day though I'm not sure. And I wanna design a labyrinth rpg that would be really fun to play.

HERE.Like everything in D&D - it's more of... hold on...
... that gif explains it nicely.

Makes me want to play a Dredd Paladin.
Shadowrun can be so much fun! I wish there was a reincarnation of Boot Hill with a better ruleset.
Question for anybody that might be familiar with the Dredd universe. Does Warlock - the alien warlock exist in the same universe?

Thanks. And yeah, you’re right. DMing isn’t all about following things by the book, and I stray from it all the time. It’s just that I wish the book was a little more useful in that area. Tables like those AEDorsay described would be nice. Thanks again for the advice, though — it’s very much appreciated :)
A labyrinth RPG sounds awesome!
