Now...
So, to give you an idea of how much I moved away from "D&D culture" for many years, I've seen a couple references to something called "a west marches" campaign -- and had no idea what it meant, lol.
So, I finally looked it up.
And...
... proceeded to laugh my ass off.
Once I was done with the superglue (i hope i got it on straight this time), i popped up here. The major differences for me are that I have a fairly fixed time for the game, and for the next campaign, thee is no "uninhabited West", there is just The Boonies (the wilderness).
But my last game was very much a West marches style -- I had 30 players roaming around it, a single "home base" to which they returned and from which they left, and then the massive lace that did have a huge story in it, but as wit my usual, everything is based on player actions and my thin hope they might pick up on a plot hook, lol.
And I've done what essentially amounts to variants of it for years -- and Wyrlde is explicitly set up so that some folks can do the whole "pop in and out" thing that sometimes happens (my mention of the Incorporates, from earlier -- when the player is not at that game, the character follows along like a ghost, incorporeal).
I think my first game like that was 95, 96? LOL. But, at least now I have a way to describe how I run my games, lol.

They lack, imo, a certain breadth and understanding of the way that nature works and such. As you note, doing so does require some effort.
Using the windspeed, Temperature, and Storm tables I had to develop (using Earth as a baseline) makes things a lot easier. For travel speeds and times, I just use the "Speed" rating that everything has, lol. I had to lay it all out as a kind of chart, but now I have a movement system that works and scales by time (round by round, day by day, and in between).
That’s awesome! Where could I get those tables? Your setting book?

Way it works - I will have five questions. First poster answers the first question, next poster answers the next, until all the questions are answered. I will summarize it in a post and have a small little adventure pieced together. Others can add to what someone's replied with (as long as it doesn't contradict their answer). So for example if someone answers question 1, someone else can explain how the town came to get that name, if it's not already explained, just to flesh things out. The important thing here is to have fun with these.
The concept - Goblins are trying to find a way inside a small, inhabited village...
1. What is the name of this village of 70 people called?
2. What is it that the goblins are trying to get (an item, rescue someone, talk to someone, etc.)?
3. What is the name of the goblin chief (and any significant goblin NPCs that a party might deal with)?
4. How has the party heard about these approaching goblins? (Are they in town by chance, hired, rumors, etc?)
5. What will the goblins do if they succeed with their mission?

The Village of Q'lamabria.
Abrians are a simple, happy people, who have a small town surrounded by what is often laughed at as a waste of effort. Long ago, the COunt was granted a feifdom and took a large, broad flat hill and slowly proceeded to carve into a series of stepped levels in the shape of a five pointed star (a Bastion fort), with broad flanges at the tips of each of the star points, a series of sturdy stone, brick, and lumber walls, and a 30 foot wide, 20 foot deep moat fed by an underground channel (2 feet square, brick lined, with sturdy chiseled stone grates) coming from the river to the south, and an exit to the north.
There are five levels, with fields on the outer two and in the region below, and each of the points has a combination of barracks/guardhouse and Village Refuge, built of brick.
The village proper, in the center, is surrounded by a 15 foot high, 15 foot thick brick and lumber wall that doubles as a barracks and living quarters for the ounts men at arms. The village is spread out within the area in a maze like, haphazard way, with narrow streets that are wide enough for two people, but not a wagon.
At the heart of the whole is the Keep itself, a wooden manor house sporting two large three story towers and and a two story main house between them, surrounded by an 8 foot high wall with a single gate and guardhouse, garens surrounding it.
The Count is paranoid about Goblins, and has an especially high loathing of them.

Yessss, thank you so much! This is what I’ve been looking for for months on end. I’m currently reading through all the stuff in here, and it covers everything I wanted that I felt 5e was lacking. I genuinely think this will open up exploration at my table in a way I’ve never been able to do. Once again, thank you so much.
okay, so rereading this I sound a little crazy. Sorry. It’s just really cool to me that I made a minor complaint about something and someone had the perfect solution lol

The Count is paranoid about Goblins, and has an especially high loathing of them.
2. What is it that the goblins are trying to get (an item, rescue someone, talk to someone, etc.)?
These are my favorite Q's.
The goblins believe that the fort marks an intersection of leylines which makes it a powerful source of wild magic. And they're right. The wild magic seems to leach into the river, causing anybody who drinks it to manifest weird magical effects, always accompanied by the appearance of stars. The further you get from the fort, the weaker the magic in the water becomes, so the goblins seek to claim the source and become powerful sorcerers.
The people in the fort boil the water to avoid these effects, because they're mostly a nuisance. The resulting magical water vapor has been collecting in a massive magical storm cloud that hangs over the village. Lately the Count has everyone reinforcing their roofs in case it finally breaks, which might be diverting resources away from reinforcing the walls.
WILD MAGIC EFFECTS, if you don't already have some that you like:
The effects last 1d12 hours. d20 1: Your ears fall off. They fly back on after the effect ends. 2: Everyone thinks your name is Greg. 3: Bees follow you around and land on you. 4: You are overcome with intrusive thoughts about throwing whatever you're holding. 5: Grapes appear under your feet when you walk barefoot. 6: A fish falls on your head any time you say a word that begins with the letter D. 7: You turn into a ghost. 8: Half of you turns into a ghost. 9: Fingers on your left hand get 50% shorter, on the right they get 50% longer. 10: Your face appears in a cloud. Its expression changes to match yours. 11: You can't speak, but you can sing. 12: Everything green looks like a frog to you. 13: You can't tell if people are joking. 14: You can hear things exactly one mile away if you concentrate. 15: Your skin is really slippery. 16: It's always snowing within 5ft of you. 17: You can cast Detect Thoughts using Charisma without expending a spell slot. 18: You think you can cast Detect Thoughts using Charisma without expending a spell slot. 19: Any time you're not concentrating on preventing this, you slowly walk north. 20: You can cast Chain Lightning using Charisma without expending a spell slot.
Ok, for the new folks, lol, so you know, anyone can participate in these question things.
Don't be shy.

(Snip) The concept - Goblins are trying to find a way inside a small, inhabited
3. What is the name of the goblin chief (and any significant goblin NPCs that a party might deal with)?
-Chief gorglinblop (neutral male goblin bard) is a very anxious goblin who has an interesting obsession with cheese and onions. Not cheese. Not onions. Cheese AND onions. He is an aspiring architect who was forced into the chief role by accident and his only aspirations is to build the most magnificent undergorund palace for him and his tribe. Work on this palace has stopped because the wild magic in the river is causing his workers to get affected by the river which flows underground and was once the goblins main water source.
-The council of advisors: grayntor (lawful evil female hobgoblin iron shadow) is using illusion magic and pretending to be a goblin under the name helotoop trayblekai. She is scouting for a hobgoblins arlord who wants to conquer the goblins and make them slaves; selamou xarjigh (neutral good non-binary goblin Druid) is the tribes shaman and sister to the rightful heir of the tribe Doukthis (see below) she wants what’s best for the tribe but considers the rivalry between Doukthis and Gorginblop to be the petty squabbling of foolish males and may try to seize the throne for herself; Doukthis (chaotic evil male goblin gladiator) is a arrogant, prideful, and downright slimy Gaston type “person” who believes that he should be the ruler of the tribe, and for once in his life he’s right, gorginblop is completely unworthy and incapable of leading the tribe correctly; isame maoreeoh (neutral non-binary goblin mage) is a booyagh booyagh booyagh (wild magic sorcerer who was only appointed to the council by gorglinblop because of his expertise at demolition
Edit: happy 25th anniversary of the sky blue, pink and white trans flag!

Occurred to me some folks might not know what a Bastion Fort is, lol.
This is a six pointed star, whereas our city has only five, but should give an idea. Bastion Forts -- also called Star Forts -- were a defensive development that made siege warfare extremely dangerous for attackers.
The broad moats limit any sort of easy land based attack using siege machines or sapping (digging under walls), and the overall design prevents attacks from utilizing blind spots because the defenders can see everything. They reduced the need for high walls and in our case, they define the shape of the village, which is meant to provide protection in a wild and untamed land!
The Count is very keen on protecting his people.

I'm fry, and I make doodles. That's why they call me FRY DOODLES. Also no pressure but check out my YouTube channel (Fry Doodles) I'm a disabled, neurodivergent, artsy dumpster fire who's always open to chat. I'm a sensitive little sad bean, and somewhat of a clown. But, I'm also god's favorite princess and the most interesting girl in the world. Crafter of Constellations, vocaloid enjoyer, waluigi’s #1 fan, space alien, your favorite pretty boy, and certified silly goose
So, I'm a cis girl, and when I was little, I had some personal vendetta against dresses. I don't know why. However, as I grew up, that turned into an aversion to anything "Girly". Whenever I would go to any sort of formal thing, I would wear a dress shirt or a suit. It's totally okay to be a tomboy, but some problems started arising for me personally: 1, People kept confusing me for a lesbian(I'm ace), and once a woman at Universal thought I was a kid named David. 2, I had no knowledge of makeup, dress styles, or fashion when I entered high school. Gradually, I learned that it's nice to do things I used to consider "girly". It felt good to break through my emotional barriers, even though It feels weird to look at myself in the mirror sometimes. I'm proud to say that I'm going to a formal event this weekend, and this time, I'm going in a dress.

If you don't mind me asking, what purpose do the asterisks serve?
It's a habit people pick up from roleplaying in PBPs and on Taverns. Words spoken in asterisks are outside the game, while the rest are part of the roleplay.
*That’s* what they’re for? I have never heard of this! I’ve always used asterisks in the normal way and to emphasize text when I can’t add italics, and while I can on DDB it is just a bit of a hassle on mobile, since I use my phone and my laptop.
If you ever get together a group for Spire, let me know, I wanna try that too.
Yeah, of course! I need to first complete a real life quest if I wish to embark on that one though: Work more to obtain disposable income; Find desire to purchase Spire instead of one of the other things I want for rpgs or books or writing or so many other things; Remember to purchase it before my money mysteriously disappears due to a foul sorcery known as “LGS” or Local Game Store… My spine shivers just thinking of it…
QOTD: What real life character development are you going through?
Warning, mines pretty rough.
I have a friend who died recently. He was young and nobody saw it coming. His death has impacted a lot of my friends lives so we have been working through the grief together. It’s hard, but I am still praising God and trusting in him.

I do the same thing, although I tend to prefer italics. In tavern threads like this one, italics have always been used for OOC speech, and it’s sort of become a tradition. I’ve done the same thing that DoodleCrisp did many times in the past, since I’m so used to typing OOC speech in that way. I’m not as sure about PBPs, but I know that many of them will represent out-of-game speech with asterisks as well.

The environmental rules are untouched, but not included, as I just wanted to get something with all the vehicle rules together.
No stats, because folks should be able to make up their own vehicle stat blocks themselves -- and the ones that 5e already has are fairly easy to transfer over (the loan was so I could show my fellow DM how to do it for the vernus game they are going to do).

First, a promised Link: Environmental Rules
That will give you what exists so far. Sorry, not proofed, not really structured, and I didn't include the vehicle tables (because I haven't finished the vehicles, lol). But none of that is hard to deal with, really -- you can use the speeds of animals and such from the main game or make up your own.
Some stuff won't make much sense (Vitality checks for cold and hot weather, etc) -- those are things because of the way I set up the Ability Scores. You can use straight Constitution for them. I also use fatigue heavily as a penalty -- but I have a 10 pont fatigue system, so ignore or use or adapt as you feel a need.
The big change is the addition of "handling" in the vehicle stuff -- that determines what the DC of something is when "driving". I included the vehicle rules to show how they link into the travel rules -- all vehicles have certain stats (and I used the basic ones from the game, really).
So, hope it helps.

Haven't done one of these in awhile...
Build an Adventure.

The effects last 1d12 hours.
d20
1: Your ears fall off.

QOTD: What real life character development are you going through?
I'm fry, and I make doodles. That's why they call me FRY DOODLES. Also no pressure but check out my YouTube channel (Fry Doodles)
I'm a disabled, neurodivergent, artsy dumpster fire who's always open to chat.
I'm a sensitive little sad bean, and somewhat of a clown. But, I'm also god's favorite princess and the most interesting girl in the world.

My character development (it's not very serious)

*That’s* what they’re for? I have never heard of this! I’ve always used asterisks in the normal way and to emphasize text when I can’t add italics, and while I can on DDB it is just a bit of a hassle on mobile, since I use my phone and my laptop.
Yeah, of course! I need to first complete a real life quest if I wish to embark on that one though: Work more to obtain disposable income; Find desire to purchase Spire instead of one of the other things I want for rpgs or books or writing or so many other things; Remember to purchase it before my money mysteriously disappears due to a foul sorcery known as “LGS” or Local Game Store… My spine shivers just thinking of it…
Warning, mines pretty rough.
I’m so sorry. That’s awful. I hope you all make it through okay.

I revisited the Vehicle rules after being loaned a copy of Avernus.
Here ya go: Vehicle Rules
The environmental rules are untouched, but not included, as I just wanted to get something with all the vehicle rules together.
No stats, because folks should be able to make up their own vehicle stat blocks themselves -- and the ones that 5e already has are fairly easy to transfer over (the loan was so I could show my fellow DM how to do it for the vernus game they are going to do).
