...and started me on my way into my next chapter in life...
Welcome to the Deathlands. Heaven for paleontologists and yo-yo enthusiasts, purgatory for everyone else.
Where do you go when your heart stops beating? Well...
Landscape of the Deathlands and the Value of Green:
In the land of the dead, there is no life (obviously). No plants grow, despite the abundance of water. In fact, the color green is completely unheard of. If something green somehow managed to find its way to this strange afterlife it would be treated as the most valuable treasure imaginable. The landscape is a dusty red and resembles a dream-like distorted desert like those in Arizona or Utah with majestic buttes and towering monoliths of stone balanced precariously all throughout the flat wasteland.
Water in the Deathlands:
Rapid rivers tear through the landscape, carving canyons and shaping stone. There are also many still pools of water, some are unfathomably deep, some are ankle deep puddles. Most are as still as a pane of glass, though some ripple in strange unnatural patterns without cause. Drinking from Deathland water is dangerous for some it can cause you to lose all memory of your life.
Dinosaurs:
Dinosaurs abound in the Deathlands. Their colossal skeletons lumber all across the landscape. Some are docile, others try to devour anything in sight out of habit.
Buried in Life, Dug Up in Death:
When wandering through the Deathlands you will come across many who once were living. In this world they take the form of their skeletal remains. However, if you look closely you will see that they are really made of fossilized stone. There is no organic material in the Deathlands and that includes bone. Many of the dead spend their time digging in the riverbanks and mountains, unearthing and brushing off new fossils which are really new arrivals to the land of the dead.
Life in the Deathlands (Haha):
These newly dug up dead either join in on the excavation or wander off into the wasteland to see what's out there. Unless they were a geologist or paleontologist in life they usually get very bored because there is not much to do out there. A few carve statues into the stone to become skeletal sculptors. Others try to reenact their lives in the desert, pantomiming all that they can remember of their past and speaking to no one in particular. Many of the dead learn how to yo-yo.
Yo-yos in the Deathlands
Yo-yos were actually invented in the land of the dead because the people there have time to kill and not much to do. It is unknown how the yo-yo was invented there, but there are an awful lot of skeletons sitting around and yo-yoing and the toy can also be used in a ritual to open a portal to the Deathlands. The yo-yo was brought to the land of the living by Calveus the great magician who managed to magically travel to the land of the dead briefly to see what it was like. He returned with the yo-yo and remarked that it was rather dull.
Death
Death himself lives in the Deathlands. Not many of the dead come across him, it's a big place, but they all recall seeing him when they first arrived. Few can really remember him, but if they saw him they would all recognize him instantly. More on this guy later...
It's been a long time, but I'm back. Feels good to see this place again... Still as grand as when I left.

The king nods, heading down the base of the mountain and into the city. The city is lively, people starting their day, kids running around on the streets. The King isn't swarmed, offered things, or anything like that. He gets waves from the kids, smiling bows from the parents, and a few awe filled glances here and there, but more or less is just accepted as a normal member of the city. He continues through, smiling and waving as he goes along.
