You should have some sort of evil judge, it has somehow been twisted and corrupts the contestant.
The Judges are already evil cosmic horror monsters.
The big twist would be the Judge being good.
Oooo that’d be so fun. The Contestant would either be all suspicious if they knew about Judges, or just happy to have a monster on their side

My protagonist, Dan-Jae "Danny" Hyun, can create greasy black liquid portals that lead to a hyperspace-style (one step here is X steps topside) sub-dimension called the Castle, and he's technically allies with the Queen (haven't really developed it yet) there purely because it serves the same Judge and he happens to be its King. However, the Queen likes things to be very particular (actually crippling OCD) and is very photosensitive, so it can't really go outside of its little domain. The way Danny deals with this is by letting it pull things in, as it is also a hoarder.
In other words, he's got an extremely powerful and mostly useless monster on his side, but a monster nontheless.

It might. Danny wouldn't be a protagonist, however, since those don't exist on RP threads.
This is just a story concept I've been thinking up. I still need to work on the setting itself a bit more.
