Well a kind VR headsets are newly made (JSYK this is set before IRL VRs, in the 1990s if I remember), and people wear them forever. Like never off, until they die. It features a girl and this robot on their journey to somewhere in USA (IDK I'm Canadian), and the world is slowly taken over by robots. Not terminator type, instead like an invasive species plus more and more peoples phone addictions. And so they continue, with these disfigured amusement park robots everywhere, huge corpses of giants far beyond us. They move more and more, getting to where they need to be, but the dead people with the headsets kinda become a hivemind. And they continue their journey
