I think storytelling has gone downhill. The world had this decade and-a-half where everyone had these great ideas turned into great pieces of modern media (books, movies, tv shows, video games, etc.), but I guess that enlightenment has been disappearing.
I have my theories as to why, but I don’t think most people here would like them lol. Essentially, though, I believe that the world has lost their new ideas. There’s hardly any good stories being written nowadays. Just reprints of old ideas. Star Wars is a good example (Andor is an extremity and abnormality here, however).
Sure there have been some good things put out, but a majority of it is just boring, bland, and bad taste. It’s like a video game reusing old assets in from a previous game, brushing up the graphics, and then saying “here’s a brand new map that you haven’t seen before!”.
On the flip side, it seems like the good stories are hard to come by because they are hard to produce. Expedition 33 is a good example. I am glad that they were able to make that and put it out, but another reason why that game is so good is because the bar for competition is pretty low.
This is just my opinion, but I feel like the quality recently is going downhill. I don’t want another story about “Master Chief” or whatever. But I do want more stories about “Halo” for example. I think the reason why Andor is so good is because it has nothing to do with the Skywalkers. It’s about Cassian. Not Luke. Not Leia. Not Rey Palpatine.
Just Cassian.
If you feel that modern storytelling is bland or uninteresting, you simply aren’t looking in the right spots, for which you have no one to blame but yourself.
Truth, friend.

I need to stop writing in-character monologues. They take up too much time.
Lol
I alwas have seen that in your rolepalys a lot
I like being able to write my thoughts down. It helps me, but it's a bad habit.
Not really, it gives the character more flavor tho
Not every character should wax poetic, though. I keep it in character, but just making characters who do that is a bit unrealistic, wouldn't you say?

To be clear, this is the type of monologue I'm talking about:
"Mad?" He sounds faintly annoyed. A long pause follows. "I guess," he concedes. "Many people have been labeled as mentally ill for looking in unorthodox places. Like Alan Turing, father of computer science. They used him for his ability to see things others couldn't, then had him castrated for the same. They said that seeing secret messages in jumbled signals was different from seeing love and beauty in another man, but I believe they are the same." He places another trap into the water. "To see something no one else does, to experience the world in an unorthodox way, to feel the way no one else feels... it is madness, yes, but it is a madness we all contain. To share that madness is the purpose of art. I keep my eyes open. Do you?"
He's putting crab pots in a sewer and waxing poetic in response to someone's questioning.

It's in-character for him too. He's an entertainer as well as an engineer and a chef. He's autistic, and for him it manifests as a variety of very specific obsessions and a lack of understanding outside of those fields. He makes knives and clocks and beer and wine and clothes and wooden toys and decorations and works in alchemical gastronomy and tea brewing and all sorts of crazy stuff, but he can't swing a sword with any great skill.

Then, if it's in character then let the writing flourish, but learn to control the writing, not stop it
Also, can you look over some homebrew for me?

The solution I have is for either the character themselves or the person who caused them to wax poetic lampshade it.

It is for the Jeff homebrewing competition, which is just to create any Jeff-related homebrew.
Let me send you a PM

The solution I have is for either the character themselves or the person who caused them to wax poetic lampshade it.
Yo, I’m Himy, He/Him. I enjoy reading books, understanding why and how things work, anime/manga, video games and obviously, TTRPGS. I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I like to think Im close. I’m good at trivia, history and science
I struggle with empathy. If you’re not sure what I mean by that, it basically means it’s hard for me to understand the mental state of others and respond with the right emotions
Should be all the important bits. Sweet
Who thinks campaigns need more DRAGONS WITH CHAINSAWS???
My head's underwater
but I'm breathing fine
You're crazy
And I'm out of my mind

That's a pretty good monologue. I like it, personally, but you could just cut down on the adding more and more. Cutting it off at 'but I believe they are the same" is a perfectly mid-length post.

Like, it's very in-character, but you could just not let yourself write any more after "no one else feels" or somewhere. Save the rest for a later post. Also -- this from the Leonidas Line?

My problem is it feels like I'm hogging the spotlight.
Yes, it is. Barbeau is a more steampunk character, but I brought him over anyway.
