The New Balios Bar: a popular establishment around the east side of Balios. Recently, it has been experiencing some… strange events. Might attract paranormal investigators.
The Old Balios Bar: shut down twenty years back, right next to the Old Balios bar. Few people have stepped into the old bar since. It’s infested with rats and spiders, and its foundation is incredibly unstable. Some people report smoke still comes out of its chimney late at night, though police never investigate. a kid died In here a few years back, part of the floor collapsed and he dropped to the basement. His body was never recovered. Definitely attracts paranormal investigators.
The Willow: An old hotel three blocks down from the Balios Bars. Not much is special about it, but it has cheap rooms and the staff don’t question much. Some say the owner, an old widow named Margaret Willow uses it as a secret hideout for a gang of thieves, or something worse. Nothing is confirmed.
Chunklo's Cat Cafe is not owned by any man, woman, or other named Chunklo. In fact, it was named after the owner's first cat, a plump maine coon with a love of tea. The cat wasn't even owned, it was a stray that was taken care of by the community. It's been run by "Chunklo's family" since before cat cafes were even a thing, but there is only ever one person working there. It changes hands every decade or so, but whoever is there wants to be there. Possibly the only one who cares about Balios, they always try to improve the dying town, seemingly ignorant to the fact that this place is sinking and taking everyone with it.
Amatarou Ocha, Boba Barista. That's what the metal plaque on the bar reads. He always has a kind and helpful word, a smile, and your favorite drink ready. Animals adore him for whatever reason, and people usually do as well. He's confident in his abilities, and is a point of stability for the people who come in to discuss unusual topics. He hears everything but has the honor to remain utterly silent, or so they say. When called upon, he has more knowledge of the town than anyone reasonably should, despite supposedly moving here two years ago.
Now look at him, feeding his cats. The five cafe cats, all up for rent, and the five shelter cats, all up for free trial and adoption. His "family," no matter the generation, are exactly like him. Different face, different build, different sex even, but always the same. All-knowing, a titan worthy of folklore. Legend says that the place is haunted despite its cozy feel, and the ghosts force the Ocha family back here, into the same role, over and over and over, just to take care of his five immortal cats. It is said that no Ocha child or cat has died in town, despite its long history of riots. They simply sit there at the counter, watching people at their worst and doing nothing to stop it.
Balios High: The only high school in Balios is located near the centre of town, in between the commercial town and residential suburbs. It is crawling with lesser Nightmares that are based on fears of exams, bullies, and general anxiety, though none of them have much power at all, as these fears are constantly passing by and transferring from person to person. However, it is within the territory of one immensely powerful Nightmare; despite new students cycling through the school each year, there is still moments where students encounter halls that are usually full and familiar dark and empty after hours, or old students return to find the school changed and twisted from what they knew. The existence of this sense of strange nostalgia feeds a greater Nightmare in Balios that is detailed below, and allows it to exist within the school's confines. Balios Mall: This large shopping mall is a short walk from the school, and is also full of Nightmares. The second-strongest Nightmare that exists in its confines is The Balios Mall Shopping Cart Ghoul, as named by the urban myths and legends surrounding it. Its true identity is a Nightmare of Abandonment, and in the day it disguises itself as a reclusive yet also overly clingy human who runs the Lost and Found. The most powerful spirit in the mall is a Nightmare that has a foothold in many other places, especially those that are frequented often by multiple people over a long period of time, and are prone to changes between their visits: schools, train stations, public restrooms, hotels, and they can also be found lingering in locations with strong ties of nostalgia, such as childhood bedrooms, malls and children's play places. This overarching, unsettling, ever-moving yet ever-present Nightmare is known simply as the Liminal; it feeds and thrives on all fear and anxiety that originates from the passing of time and the loss of what one knew, both from the past and into the future. Simply put, any time a person sees a place that was once familiar to them warped by the passing of time, the Liminal grows stronger.
Red Wednesday Bridge: a small but wide bridge that crosses a part of the river running through Balios notorious for its rushing speed and terrifying depth. It gained the name from a notorious massacre, Red Wednesday, fifty years ago, nineteen people, seventeen innocent bystanders, one a police officer, and one, the murderer. He planned to blow up the bridge, with many cars still on it. The police officer apprehended him before he set off the bomb, but it seems to have malfunctioned and went off anyways, to a lesser extent. Eight died from the explosion, three died trying to save the others, and six fell to their death as part of the bridge collapsed. Both the murderer and the officer were part of the casualties. His motive was unknown, but he was linked to three other, Less drastic crimes across town, all involving bombs.
Rumor has it, every night for a few months of the year, from midnight to 1:00 am, you can see the lights while driving on any major road leading into or out of town. Doesn't matter the road or which way you look- you can see them regardless. Outside of that window of time, though, there's nothing there- no lights, no structure of any kind, nothing. There for a brief while and gone again as quickly as it appears.
There is something there, though. Where else would the music be coming from? Why else would there be a faint smell of warm wiring and caramel in the air if one were to follow the lights? Why else would the ones who do follow the lights can't remember a thing about what they found come dawn- if they don't vanish before dawn, that is?

The Slink: A local cryptid attributed to the disappearance of a young schoolboy, Oslo 'Ozzy' Snare, in 1993, after grainy CCTV footage surfaced showing a strange figure luring the child into a culvert near the Red Wednesday bridge. It is widely believed that the unfortunate Oslo was killed and eaten, though any evidence is presumed to have been covered up by the authorities. Lies!!! I did no such thing. The boy needed someone to talk to, somewhere to run. His family certainly never cared. I healed his bruises, set his wounds, gave him a way out of there. Cannibalise him? You're having a laugh!!!
Unnaturally tall and thin, with deep black eyes and deathly pale skin, the Slink has been occasionally sighted throughout the town since, such as by a pair of urban explorers who were taking photographs of the nearby abandoned chemical plant. In that case, the explorers wandered into a cloud of poisonous gas, and when they awoke, they were in a different part of the factory with the monstrous figure standing over them. Thankfully, they made it out alive, fleeing before the Slink had a chance to attack. Other, less dramatic, sightings mainly involve seeing a gaunt, pallid face watching through a vent, grating, or simply obscured by shadow. Have you heard of the Third Man syndrome? Maybe I'm that guy...
The being: A tall being wearing a hood and a mask. The mask has no features. The being will help with kids' pets stuck in trees or mounds of dirt. If the parents kick the pet in front or out of view of the being, the parent gets teleported to the middle of Death river or death river's woodland and is never seen again.
Death river:A river which the being stands by. Death river is known for its fast rapids and thick woodland. In 1985 a group of 6 male teens walked by the river. 5 got caught in the rapids and the 1 got labeled missing and eventually labeled dead. Some say the being is the last teen is the being.
