Hey morons, idk if half of the current posters will even recognize me, but I was idle scrolling probably just from old muscle memory from the good old days (read: 3 years ago) and saw this thread and decided **** it I’ll post. If you recognize me haii and if you don’t let my post count be proof of my experience on ddb. I’ll be saying my thoughts regardless if someone else has already said them.
Adohands is in a worse place now than it was 2 or 3 years ago. I don’t think anyone can argue with me on that. I think the beginning of the end for this one was, as much as I hate to say it, Onions. It was Sel’s (a new forum goer) first thread about some random dumb thought they had and we just ran with it and made it a new therapy/chat thread, and for a while there was nothing wrong with it. But with new people that weren’t around before it set an awful example that ddb was this casual internet void full of nerds that you can just talk to when it wasn’t back then and I sincerely hope it isn’t now. Back then the biggest thread was the DAO, which by itself was a lovely thread but also set a bad example. In the DAO we were rping as teens because that’s what the premise was, but to new kids it gave the false impression that Adohands is a place for teens to do teen things because DAO was the “face” of Adohands at the time. Skipping forwards a lot to the Baalze vs Cyno drama, a lot of the more experienced taverners who in the cycle would’ve explained how Adohands works to new people had either already left or were in the process of leaving, meaning the newer taverners didn’t really have a good example for how to act, which I ultimately believe led to the overflow of low effort, pointless threads that exist today. Taverners today don’t know what makes a good thread or why old ones succeeded while new ones aren’t. The difference is blatantly visible when you compare the taverns of today with those that I got my posts on. I had close to 400 days on Adohands before I posted my first Tavern (Demonweb), as taverns back then were big projects by experienced taverners with lots of lore explaining the world, even if it was a tavern based on an established ip, and a defined setting and set of rules to guide roleplayers. Respect is another one. The people Drummer reffered to as the 2022 crew had mutual respect between each other and defined hard rules, a big one being no pvp without consent and no killing others’ characters, no matter what. Even if you don’t like the person, even if the person is being annoying, both of you are mature and can storming figure it out without drama and bull**** and taking sides to try to divide all of adohands to either my side or their side.
Have a lovely day, Jesus loves you, Monks out.
I wasn't on Onions really at all when it exploded like it did, but I do agree with you that it was a cultural shift icon of sorts.
I'm not active on taverns anymore but from what I'm gathering, a good step would be to start putting more effort into them again and make high-effort taverns more widespread then low-effort ones? (Again I'm not in the tavern scene so I'm not that knowledgeable on how many high-quality ones there are, but from what I've heard there's been a lot of low effort ones recently.)
Also IDK if you'll see this but hi Monks
A lot of the newer taverns aren't that lore filled. The most recent I've thought of are The LoTR one I made, and gods TTRPG.
I see.
I remember quite a bit of taverns back in the day that had extensive lore. The Bloody Barnacle, the Universe Smorgasbord (although that was lore the players established), etc. I'm also kind of just listing taverns I liked, but hey maybe them being detailed contributed to me and many others liking them so much. So I do think more detailed taverns might be a good next step.
Do y'all know what the intro to the og tavern was? Random question
I personally wasn't around for it. Most of the users that were are probably gone by now.

Question for anyone who sees this: have I put enough work in on my taverns?
Your taverns were both fandom taverns, and those either do really well or not well at all. Considering a wide amount of the adohands userbase is trans, I could see why Harry Potter wouldn't go well, and I personally haven't read dungeon crawler carl
Wonder if we could maybe make a tavern 3 (I'm sure someone did make that) for like... free rp as whoever you want from whatever original world, predominantly fantasy.
That’s what I was planning to do! My storybook tavern!
Sick, okay. Want help? You'd be the owner ofc. I just think rules for encounters n plots n stuff might be really fun. Also a no fighting inside the tavern rule is usually best.
Yes. No fighting, just rp.
I mean some fighting might be cool, but whatever ya want! just there's a no fighting force field if fighting is allowed.

Yeah, like special no-fighting zones.

Been thinking about what Monks said, and I definitely agree
It feels like firstly a bunch of taverns are just a barebones set of rules and a paragraph of lore (not all [I mean look at the god ttrpg] of them, just a lot of them). I think that a lot of people don't hold respect for the work that people put in for their projects as well
I have a plan for a tavern of my own but I'm not sure I should post it tbh mostly because mine aren't super popular

I just looked through some of the old threads and there was a lotta stuff I feel has disappeared. A tavern description, rules on combat and encounters. But also like... the excitement. I think when there was one tavern, people were really excited about it and there were stuff like tavernpedias, drawings, pinterest boards, character sheets (personality kind), and whole cutscenes people put a ton of effort into. I think people need to be more excited about their characters and taverns, which can be really hard for me personally as I have ADHD and lose hyperfixations quickly. But I think if we put effort into our characters and interactions, it could be a lot more fun, and maybe that way we can add some mutual respect between roleplayers?

I fully agree with all of this, and the damage Onions did cannot be overstated. I feel like standards for threads gradually dropped until the focus was no longer on writing or worldbuilding and Adohond's became a place almost entirely for socializing. Not to be some forum snob, but I doubt any of this new wave knows who Adohond even is. It's devolved into a big chatroom which is no longer interesting or all that funny.
Chris was gone long before I got here. So no. I mean people like Nothic, Ash (Although their back now), Baalze, Fry, EJO, Cyno, Tara, drummer, Vitus (Probably one of my favorite people on the forum games), Bard (The original.) Moon, Coro. The list goes on and on.
Aw man, Vitus is gone now? He was amazing. And don't forget Yondor. Yon, Drum, and I had some great times on the Twinkling Stars Tavern. That was probably my favorite era of DDB.
