 because my roll was lower than 29 it becomes 29 I assume you lose the contest.

 I don't think there is any way i don't get that staff on my turn.

well congratulations. you aren't a sorcerer, wizard, or warlock so you can't use it, and you aren't attuned to it to use it anyways, and I haven't been using it anyways. all this means is that there's a miffed sorcerer that now wants his staff back. also I need to roll to see if I'm even on the material plane when you try that. 11 or higher, I disappear into the ethereal plane until the start of my next turn at my turn's end, 10 or lower your action occurs as normal. 5

so you grab at empty space in the darkness.

you can ready action for this to play out when I come back anyways though.

on the turn when I come back, with or without my staff, I cast power word stun if your ioun stone isn't up, and chain lightning (targeting you, the ioun stone, and a random couple of bushes) if it is. if it's power word stun, you are stunned with no save, if it's chain lightning roll a dex save or take 50 lightning damage. either way, I use hound of ill omen before doing this, summoning a modified dire wolf that has these changes:  The hound is size Medium, not Large, and it counts as a monstrosity, not a beast. It appears with a number of temporary hit points equal to half your sorcerer level (10 for me). It can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. The hound takes 5 force damage if it ends its turn inside an object. At the start of its turn, the hound automatically knows its target’s location. If the target was hidden, it is no longer hidden from the hound.

the hound imposes disadvantage on all saving throws you make while it's within 5 feet of you

 well for one, it requires you to take a ready action instead of attacking, eating up your reaction. for two, it lets me appear within 10 feet of where I disappeared, effectively adding +10 to my move for that turn, without provoking attacks of opportunity.

so is your ioun stone out? or are you getting power word stunned instead?

 anyway while you are gone i'm going to cast wish to clear the darkness and then i will get ready to grab the staff as soon as you get back. 

you can cast wish to dispel magic, but readying an action is your action.

again, you could use it to cast heal, but not directly heal yourself. not only that, but I come back at the start of my turn. so you can do that, but you can't grab my staff as well.
