AD&D (2e) tragic human paladin named Jyin. He was faced with an ethical dilemma to knowingly perform an evil act (for the greater good) or knowingly perform a chaotic act (to avoid knowingly performing evil). In the end, I was forced to play an ex-paladin for a while before he died. When Arn was forced to choose between his vow as a Knight and his Love, I felt like I could identify with his pain and dilemma because I once faced the same struggle.

"Father" !?! JK, I was kid when I played AD&D. I still play Jyin today, he's a War Domain Cleric though. The trauma of ex-paladinship steers my characters away from taking any oaths.

If you were a kid when you played AD&D then you're younger than my dad since he was in college. Nice with Jylin. I can see War Cleric being a paladin-alternative. Though I'm curious if he's standard human or V-Human with your 5e version.
Just started a War Cleric myself. Briar Oakthorn. That +10 to attack rolls plus Halfling luck to reroll 1's the first time is something I want to try out for using guiding bolt and Inflict Wounds on the regular. (Usually I look at the chance of losing a spell slot on a low d20 as too risky.)

I brought Jyin back to life for Adventure League as a Variant Human with the Sentinel Feat. His favorite spells are Spiritual Weapon and Shield of Faith. When he doesn't have Spiritual Weapon running, he can use a bonus action attack a number of times per day equal to his Wisdom Modifier, so naturally he's got an 8 Dexterity. But with heavy Armor and a Shield he's a tank and with Sentinel, he can be "sticky". He's a Sticky Tank that uses Channel Divinity: Guided Strike on his Opportunity Attack to make sure that Sentinel hits and reduces target movement to zero. It's not the most OP combo in 5e but I love it. It's only ever happened twice but it was epic.
