It is a dragonborn (brass I think) because I have a character concept of a multicolored dragonborn. She is of copper ancestry, but has scales of every other possible color.
She really enjoys when people mistake her for a gold or silver because (in her words), "I'm a copper, for Paladine's sake! I love that kind of stuff!"

can someone explain the lore of critical role to me (a layman)
1. The Founding - The First Age of Exandria. The gods came into the world and created different creatures to inhabit the world. Then rose the Primordial beings creatures that existed in Exandria prior to the gods coming in to claim it. The primordial beings are elemental titans and they wrecked havoc on the god's creation. The god's split into two factions one faction the Prime deities wished to stay and conquer the primordial beings so the world would be safe for their children (creation) and the betrayer gods who gave up on the world and became warped and succumb to madness. The Prime Deities saddened by the loss of so many of their children gave the mortal beings magic to help defend themselves. At the same time as the gifting of magic the first metallic dragons were created and tasked with aiding the mortals and protecting them. With the help of the dragons some peace was returned and this is when the children of creation began to first offer their worship to the gods. The Prime Deities with the aid of mortal champions were able to destroy the primordial beings and banish the betrayer gods. Vassalheim was founded during this period and is known as the cradle of civilization, and the city has strong ties to the prime deities.
2. Age of Arcanum - Mortal mages became very powerful after some time and they were able to create their own life-forms and many began pursuing immortality. One mortal even ascended to godhood in her quest for immortality (Raven Queen). One mage wanted to harness the power of the betrayer gods and broke their imprisonment unleashing the mad gods back into the world. Mortals with the aid of the prime deities were able to drive back the initial assault of the betrayer gods but did not end the conflict. Thus the gods prepared for war while mortals began using all their arcane knowledge to forge new weapons. This was the height of magical knowledge and also the folly of mortals lead to a path of destruction.
3. The Calamity - This is the age that encompasses the second war with the betrayer gods. The war lasted for centuries destroying most of civilization and rearranging even land masses itself. Vassalheim is the only major city to really survive the calamity. The prime gods and mortals won as the betrayer gods were banished.
4. The Divergence - The divine gate was constructed which keeps both the prime deities and the betrayer gods from crossing over into the material plane. The Prime deities hoped this would seal the betrayer gods away for good. Unable to cross into the physical realm the gods power and influence over mortals waned.
5. Post Divergence - This is the current age. Gods are unable to cross into the physical realm but they can grant boons to mortals. This is where Critical Role takes place. Vassalheim still stands. And civilization is steadily progressing.
Their are a lot of little tid bits of lore that really fills it out even more. Sorry if this is too much for a crash course.

I'm not that educated on it. Essentially there are 4 ages throughout the history of Exandria (the world) and you are playing in most recent.
The first is the gods coming to the world.
The second is the age of high magic.
The third is the Cataclysm, where the gods left and most high magic fell.
The fourth is the current age, where heroes depended on to save the world and communities.

That's the world of Krynn, unless Matt Mercer copied its backstory.
