The Locsure Agency was a renowned detective firm settled in Western Europe, isolated from the rest of the town and situated at the edge of a large seaside cliff. Founded by mastermind Perseus Locsure, his helpers continued his legacy after his passing. However, over time some of the detectives' ideals have strayed from the original intent of bringing justice. Some wanted wealth, others status, and a few... Well, you'll see in a moment. In addition to the aforementioned corruption, Locsure's death left incredibly large shoes to fill, and performance began to drop. The firm began to lose money, and quickly. They had 2 weeks maximum before they would go bankrupt. One day, they woke up for work and were shocked to see the sight they saw. A letter was on the desk, addressed to the agency. They were excited for a new job opportunity, but as they read they realized this was no ordinary task.
"To the Locsure Agency and my fellow detectives within it,
As we all know, the firm is currently undergoing a horrid decline in profit, and soon we might have to close up shop. And I find this very sad, you see. This firm taught me everything I could ever need for my future. How to handle evidence, the art of the red herring, and of course that nobody can be trusted. So, I've been gathering money on the side. Quite a large sum, in fact. Enough to guarantee your firm won't shut down for years at minimum. However, I am certain you've heard the word on the streets. 'The Agency has declined in talent,' they say. If I simply handed you the money, you would still need to regain the people's trust. But, after discussion with some colleagues of mine, we've figured out a perfect solution! If you are as excellent detectives as you advertised, you should be able to spot the moles within the people you've worked with every day. And, well, I've done quite a long monologue so allow me to get straight to the point:
The challenge before you is simple. 3 of us are the culprits. We shall eliminate one innocent each night. In the day, we shall all discuss our thoughts on who we think it is. I shall leave one door unlocked, and that is the balcony that opens to the cliffs by the sea.
If you can find us all, congratulations! You should be able to find the money within the building, you can flaunt on the newspaper that you solved the mystery of the century, and your agency shall flourish. Otherwise, well... You should have known what a career of crime and pain entailed.
Good luck, detectives.'"
The doors were indeed all locked besides the one stated. The agency looked around at their other members. The game is afoot now.
(Yeah that's right I'm shadow-dropping a new mafia game, who's gonna stop me)
Hello to mafia players new and old! For the new, mafia is a social deduction game that we have ran on the forums a lot. It dies for some time here and there but it comes back eventually (you're reading an example of this concept in effect). The game revolves around a group of mostly innocent players having to find the not so innocent mafia among them, while said mafia have to keep themselves hidden while they kill the town in secret.
How the Game Works:
Mafia on here starts with a simple process.
1. Make a sign up thread, and wait for enough people to join. What I'm doing here.
2. The game starts. Different roles will be assigned to different people. This can be a Town Role, Mafia Role, or Neutral Role. The different roles are in the Roles Section if you want to see what they are.
3. People are pm'ed their roles and the game thread is made. The game starts. :D
Then the actual game is split into two periods: Day and Night.
Day: People can discuss who they think mafia is and vote for who they think is the most suspicious. You can vote someone by saying: VOTE: PERSON or choose against it by saying VOTE: SKIP VOTE. The one with the most votes dies, and their role will be revealed. Day lasts 48 IRL hours (or more if I'm busy or purposefully extend it), and then it goes to night.
Night: This is when the regular townsfolk sleep and those with special roles do their stuff. Everything during night is done in PMs for secrecy, and people don't discuss the game in the main thread (you can goof around, just don't say stuff like who you're sus of). Night lasts 24 IRL hours (or more if I'm busy or purposefully extend it), and then it goes back to day and I'll reveal the results of the actions (whether it be in PM or the main thread).
Day and Night may last shorter then expected if everyone has voted for day or done their actions for night. They go on in an endless cycle until a win goal is met.
Mafia: Have there be an amount of non-mafia equal to the amount of mafia, since they can't be voted out then and are free to slaughter.
Townsfolk: Eliminate all of the mafia and free the town of evil!
Neutral: Each neutral role has their own goal that they're working towards. They work with neither mafia nor the town.
After the condition for winning is met, they win!!! Truly the plot twist of all time.
General Rules:
1. Don't be rude. It's just a game, don't get mad over someone making a mistake or two.
2. Dead people will be added to a Graveyard PM where they can discuss with other people who have met an unfortunate fate, and the roles of everyone will be revealed to them if they want (whether or not they're disclosed is up to the first person who dies). I feel like this is obvious, but don't talk about the game in the main thread if you're a ghost. You can goof around in the main thread at night, but you can't talk about the actual game at any time or talk at all during the day. Even if it's misinformation, ghosts cannot say ANYTHING that would potentially sway people's votes.
3. NO PM SHARING. If you want, you are free to share your role, but you can't provide out of game proof of that. It's fine to say "I'm a townsfolk", it's not to say "I'm a townsfolk, here is the exact wording or a screenshot of my Role PM from Gibber."
4. Not a rule, but feel free to ask for rule clarifications if you're unsure of stuff! Don't want any confusion, besides scrambling to figure out the mafia. :)
5. If you want to join after the game has started, or if you need to step out of the game for whatever reason, there'll be a queue system where people who need to leave can be replaced by others.
6. Put the word "mystery" in your first post to show that you read these.
7. Don't start any more mysteries then we already have. Meaning, don't make unofficial PMs to talk to each other in secret.
Note: In the past mafia games have had a problem where people don't get mafia and then don't participate much because of it, or they just have stuff going on and don't let us know in advance. This brings the game to a crawl and often lets the mafia get a free but boring win if the big talkers are killed first. By joining this game, you agree to actually participate in it regardless of your role. If you have IRL stuff and you'll be gone for a while (around a week or more) then let us know in advance so I can try to find a replacement player. If multiple people think they'll be on and off then they can be given the same player slot.
Roles:
Some of these roles will be custom and will be marked as such. If people want a more complex game then we can use them. Otherwise, the game will be more simple and not have any custom roles. We could also do only some of the custom roles and not use others.
Town
Regular Hire (Vanilla Townie)- No special abilities.
Locsure's Assistant (Detective)- Knows much about analysis of suspects. Each night, you can choose one person to investigate. You learn if this person is innocent (Town) or guilty (Mafia or Neutral).
Security Guard (Doctor)- Hired to protect the agency from any criminals. Uses a trap that detects unauthorized persons entering rooms, forcing murderers to flee if they don't want to get caught. Each night, you can choose someone to protect (this can be yourself). If the Mafia or Executioner attempts to kill that person, they will not die. If you choose the wrong person, then you cannot protect that person again for one night. (I may not actually use this rule let me know your thoughts on it)
Officer (Vigilante)- Has a revolver they plan to use to eliminate the culprit themselves. On any night, you can choose to fire your gun at a person of your choice, killing them and revealing their role in the morning. If you kill a townsfolk, you are overcome by guilt and cast your revolver into the sea, becoming a Regular Hire.
Landlord (Jailer)- Their keys to the house have been stolen by some unknown scoundrel, so they have to board up the doors instead. Each night, you can choose someone to roleblock, nullifying any actions that person might take that night.
Messenger (Custom)- Handled telephone calls for the agency, and although it doesn't seem to be working for any external calls, they can still use it to communicate with rooms inside the building. You can write one message per night, which the host (me) PMs to an individual of your choice. This can be interrogation, warnings/advice, or whatever else you can think of. The recipient will not know your identity, only the message sent. They then can choose to send a response back or not. If they do, then the messenger receives it in the morning.
Neutral
We will either have only one of these or none at all.
Red Herring (Jester)- An escape artist who needs a reasonable alibi to escape the building, which they believe can be achieved by being voted out and surviving the deadly fall to the ocean. Upon doing so, they will activate a perilous explosive in the building and kill X people of their choice (X equals the amount of starting players divided by 2, for 12 players it would be 6). If this would cause the game to end, the Escape Artist wins.
Was going to just name this "Escape Artist" but then I realized the name Red Herring and it was too good to pass up.
Amnesiac (Custom)- Came in asking the agency to help them remember who they are. Really will just imprint on whoever they see die first. Each night, choose someone who you think might die by the morning. If you are correct, then you gain their role and win on whatever condition they did.
Executioner (Serial Killer)- Already believed the whole agency needed to go. This brought them over the edge. Each night, you can choose to kill one person. If you make up half the town, you win. (If the other person left is a mafia, then you break the tie).
Mafia
The Cook (Mafia Goon)- Stabs their victims with knives. Is eligible for the night's kill, no special abilities.
The Butler (Consort)- Is only eligible for the night's kill if the other two mafia are dead. Stole the house keys from their higher up, and now can prevent anyone from interfering with the mafia's plans. Each night, you can choose to roleblock one person.
Locsure's Rival (Mafia Detective)- Eligible for the night's kill. Has excellent skills of analysis, allowing them to analyze not just alignment but their exact capabilities. Each night, you can choose one person to investigate. You learn this person's exact role and alignment. You cannot analyze and kill on the same night.
The Brewer (Custom) (If this role is used it will replace mafia detective)- Eligible for the night's kill. Can prepare poisoned concoctions, one only lasting a day and the other a bit more permanent. Once per game when doing the night's kill, you may kill someone and fake the death of the other. In the morning, two people will be presented as dead. One is actually dead, and the other is silenced for the day and can't speak. Their roles will both show as the role of the person who actually died. The end of the day will reveal the real death. You cannot use this ability if it would result in mafia being equal to the amount of alive town that can talk. (For example, if mafia v town would be 3v4, but one townsfolk goes unconscious and therefore it becomes 3v3)
Please feel free to give feedback on any of these roles, especially the custom ones. I'm willing to change any of them if I believe they are unbalanced.
After this game, DryRuinss will be running the next one, and if anyone wants to run after that then feel free to volunteer!
Player List (0)- The agency is hiring...
Have fun, and let the mystery begin!
