That sounds pretty cool! How far away is the spooky bit from the regular bit? The only potential issue I can see is that an already small group of players might end up further split up
Pretty close. maybe north of the regular bit?

I am making a tavern, but I have one problem, they always suck and die in a few days. So I have decided that this new tavern will be collaborative effort! Please, I need your constructive criticism, so tell me what I’m doing wrong.
The concept is that it’s a tavern themed around fairytales and is set in a magical forest. The only thing I’ve decided is that there will be a part of the forest where the creepier, more spooky characters live (though they will obviously be able to explore and interact with the other characters). They characters could be anything from the traditional Disney fairytale style characters, creepy vibes of the older, Bothers Grimm stories, or maybe even you could pull a shrek and have a character that deconstructs tropes?
So, what do you all think?
I like it! I'll probably play as my candy architect hexblood character.
Cool! Any criticism or suggestions?

OK, so we have a village, I’d say that would be south of the forest, and the spooky bit of the forest would be up north. Maybe I’ll wait for more people to be online, then I’ll make it?

'How's it going? Anyone wanna rp on YonStore? Also, I was thinking of banning another character, what do you guys think? Oh, hi Dudes *insert Star Wars reference* *aggressively plays Riptide*'
Wait whats your connection to riptide because i could have met you IRL if it’s the same as mine…
Trust me mine are worse. They die after fifteen minutes and then people try to revive them and i dont realize and they die again. All of this within like a week

(i know i said im taking a break but i must say something)
I think the Reason Taverns only last a couple days is because you just cant get as immersed in it as you can with physical gameplay. For a couple of reasons: 1 people dont have character sheets on taverns so theres less unqiueness in character abilitys. 2 anyone can say anything at any time, and sometimes you just want certain players and not a public affair. 3 its very slow because not all players are ever on at the same time, you may want a fellow party member for help or to ask them a question, but you might have to wait days for a response by which time your post will be buried. 4 The DMs arent always on which makes Exploration so much harder when you cant just ask the DM about your surroundings and have to stick to a place you know. 5 And players dont level up so theres not as much a sense of progress as there is in a normal game
(If something i said you disagree with, please tell me. Im open to the possibility that im simply wrong, but first you must prove it to me)
like this post if you agree with these reasons
*Cracks knuckles*
I have a few points.
First of all, I think you can be just as immersed in a Tavern, pbp, or any thread as you can a physical session. Things move faster on Taverns, but yet people still have the luxury of time to write exactly what they do. This also gives the DM/Mod time to describe in perfect detail, and make adventures and plot hooks more intriguing.
In your first point, you suggested that there is less uniqueness in Tavern characters abilities, in comparison to the typical D&D session alternative. I can't say I agree with this. There could possibly be more depth in campaign characters abilities (even then its close) but I believe that Tavern characters are by far more unique in that aspect. Everyone has something they want to try out, a new crazy concept, irl inspired idea, or anything in between.
Responding to your second point, I think that's not a problem, but the beauty of Taverns. If you want to roleplay in small numbers, try a play by post or a PM roleplay. Taverns themselves are hubs for togetherness and outside influence, the very word "Tavern" tells you that you're in a public space. It's a place to roleplay with all kinds of ideas in play, and with all kinds of people. And even then, you get plenty of chances to just roleplay with one person, quote chains galore.
Next, the third point you made. I totally get where you're coming from, waiting for people can be annoying. But at the same time, it makes sure you don't get one track minded and roleplay with one person all the time, or even one character. I think we can all take note from this, getting stuck with one character/idea can end up unfun for everyone after a while. Sometimes switching things up is fun, you can always come back to your original later. I need to pay more attention to this myself. But I digress. Waiting for people can be annoying, but it also makes everything free and easy. I would not call Taverns slow.
Point 4: Exploration and Mod/DM activeness is definitely a problem that we all struggle with. But appointing mods so you can cover more times, and like Kobold is doing, making things collaborative is a good way to solve this. Exploration is easy when everything has already been laid out, and people are around to answer your questions. The YonStore is a great example of this.
And finally, point number 5. You're right, characters don't usually level up, and it can result in a lack of a sense of progress. At least, proof of progress that is. Character development is a Massive aspect of all roleplay, Especially in Taverns. Having your character(s) grow and change in accordance to their experiences and the people around them can give the player tons of pride in their work, and lots of that feeling of progress. In my opinion, levels don't matter, how you feel and how others do is what does.
That's my thoughts! Your opinion is in no way bad, or wrong, you have a lot of really great points. You said I should try and prove it to you if I felt differently, so I did my best XD. But again, just what I think, not whats necessarily right.
As For the topic of why peoples Taverns die, I think I know what's happening. First off, this is in no way meant to offend anyone, you don't have to take onboard what I say, just keep doing you my friends. But I have a theory that I'm pretty confident in.
I think that there are way too many Taverns at the moment. Last year, there were 2, and I waited and waited for those to become less active before putting mine forward. Nowadays, they're everywhere, and have loads of different themes. My theory is this: No matter how many Taverns there are, people can only post so much, and only have the energy to roleplay to a certain level! If there was just one Tavern, it would go through the roof with posts, everyone bringing every concept and idea under the sun to it. But now, there's like 10 that are "around" as such, so posts will be divided amongst them. And even then you have to account for some being more popular than others.
This is in no way me saying "stop making Taverns", like I said before, Y'all just keep doing you, doing what feels right. But at the same time, you can't expect everything to blow up.
Thanks for reading! Love Y'all, I have loads of respect for your thoughts, and just what you do in general :)))

The only thing I’m nervous about is the idea of it dying super fast like all my other threads.

Not really. I honestly wish I did though, but I already like this idea a lot (and I didn't sleep very well last night).
Maybe add a little NPC village nearby? I don't know. I'm better at taking criticism than giving it, and I am not good at taking criticism.
Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
May each word that I speak be backed by each of my teeth.
Yeah, a village would be great!
