Random thought: a book or movie, where the main character, from the present, travels back in time, but he thinks he traveled forward, as Earth is a wasteland due to pollution. He is picked up by a group of survivors, which includes his great great grandson.
So, in the world of the story, there is a completely missing piece of history, which was basically our world at its peak before pollution killed earth. Most humans died off, history and signs of life were destroyed, and humanity started anew. The main character lives in the period of the second humanity.
