Thalia was an orphan raised by two strongmen who worked in the Stanton Circus. They raised and cared for her until she turned 20 and became the third member of the Stanton Circus Strongmen (and woman) act. The crowd loved them. Sadly, a rival ringmaster caused a fire in the tent during one of the shows, causing the entire thing to burst up in flame, killing no one except Thalia’s adoptive fathers Toreck (Half-Orc) and Nickal (Human). The audience was appalled by this and immediately turned on Thalia, believing her demonic heritage somehow caused the flames. Thalia, traumatized by that night, ran away from the circus and vowed vengeance on the man who took her parents.

I quit my brother's DnD campaign last night. He's a great DM, don't get me wrong, but a small word of advice for anyone who wants to run an exploration-based campaign: you need to give a clear baseline. In most DnD games it's just "tolkienesque fantasy," but if you want to take that away you have to replace it with something that you can adequately explain to the players.
