Making a tinkerer with a giant robot for the Zephyr tavern, and I was wondering if any of you had suggestions for what they could be like.
They're not an artificer, but a homebrew class... which is basically an artificer. However, they trade spellcasting and Infusions for making actual, permanent, nonmagical inventions. There is a lot more creativity available with this class.

Ooh, sounds like a cool class. What’s it called?
maybe they could be sorta like a Frankenstein style genius, maybe the robot has the memories and personality of a dead person that the tinkerer knew? I don’t know if you already kinda have a backstory planned, so I’m just throwing around ideas.
Nice. I wonder how many goals each side will have at the end of the 3rd inning.
GO SPORTSBALL!
No it's how many slam dunks occur when the pitcher hits the ball
Um, Pitchers don't hit balls. They kick them while passing the baton to the next person in the relay.
Oh, wait. I think they bonk the person holding the ball with the baton, then throw it into the lacrosse nets the players hold. Then the person with the net does a slam dunk into the abyssal hole to the underground, while throwing orange slices at enemies.
as an American, can confirm

I don't actually have a backstory planned yet, but I was thinking he was an Ivory Tower type who had a strange obsession for a long time that drove him to "adventure." That's what I have so far. I like your idea, but I'm still unsure how I want to finish the character.

Maybe he’s a geography nerd and wants to map the world or something? Maybe a traveling merchant that sells his unique inventions that went exploring for inspiration?

Maybe he made the robot with his own interpretation of someone he knew? That could be interesting. No idea who it could be though. Perhaps a lover? A professor? Both?

I was thinking something more self-destructive and more obviously insane. Oh, here's an old and very Baalze-y one I had: create a cookbook with recipes for every edible thing in existence, which requires eating everything.

Maybe he was some sort of mentor to someone, and that person died in some sort of freak accident, and he built the robot to replace them? And so he’s training the robot in mechanics and stuff.
or maybe his lover, and he’s trying to rebuild their personality, but it isn’t exactly going as intended?

“You never know if it’ll kill you if you never try!”
I actually made a monster once that was a normal human or halfling born with an arm that’s actually the giant neck, head, and mouth of a sea monster, and this just reminded me of it.
Hmm... thinking more about it, I'm reminded of the Prisoner class from Elden Ring: you were born rich enough to go to magic (or in this case, engineering) school, but you got arrested for some heinous and unspecified crime. You escaped somehow.
Imagine what a character like this with a backstory like that. Had this obsession from childhood, which led him to commit one or several unspeakable crimes (or be accused of them for some added Ray Bradbury), but his skills allowed him to escape. Now he has this gigantic robot at his side, its mind made in the crude image of someone he lost due to his actions (real or imagined).

It kinda reminds me of iron man. So he built a giant robot to escape?

Quite possibly. Imagine if the robot was made to be a representation of someone long dead. Like, someone's interpretation of Hieronymus Bosch based purely on his paintings.
I want this guy to be one of those people who pass as normal at a glance, but once you talk to them you rapidly realize this guy is batsh*t crazy and you need to find an excuse to lease now.

Ooh, interesting. Maybe like the leader of a village he grew up in that’s been dead for several generations, and the current leader is reeeeallly bad, so he tried to replace them with a robot, but he has absolutely no idea what said leader was like and the robot is probably worse than the normal leader.
unless my character is even more absolutely crazy.
