Hmm... thinking more about it, I'm reminded of the Prisoner class from Elden Ring: you were born rich enough to go to magic (or in this case, engineering) school, but you got arrested for some heinous and unspecified crime. You escaped somehow.
Imagine what a character like this with a backstory like that. Had this obsession from childhood, which led him to commit one or several unspeakable crimes (or be accused of them for some added Ray Bradbury), but his skills allowed him to escape. Now he has this gigantic robot at his side, its mind made in the crude image of someone he lost due to his actions (real or imagined).
It kinda reminds me of iron man. So he built a giant robot to escape?
Quite possibly. Imagine if the robot was made to be a representation of someone long dead. Like, someone's interpretation of Hieronymus Bosch based purely on his paintings.
I want this guy to be one of those people who pass as normal at a glance, but once you talk to them you rapidly realize this guy is batsh*t crazy and you need to find an excuse to lease now.
Some of your other descriptions of him trying figure out how humans work and a willingness to lobotomize make me think of Adam from Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 4. Adam wasn't exactly passing for normal (even with his physical looks aside) but it rings some of the same bells.
