I'm not familiar with the Mountain Biking is organized. How do the categories work in terms of needing to qualify for them? (I would've thought things were divided by age/gender, but it sounds like that's not the case.)
And top 20%, nice. That's pretty awesome.
There are age and gender categories, but I’m already a freshman racing with sophomores and juniors, which means I can move even further up, I just can’t get to things like Varsity
Vitus have you ever been mountain biking?
Not really. Not really trails like that in my area. And while there is a trail in a nearby forest preserve that's unpaved, it's also fairly well kept so I wouldn't say it's like the kind you're riding most likely.

There’s some knarly stuff that we ride. There was a 30 second rock garden at the last race that put you off a drop 😰

How much of a drop is normal?
And that does sound pretty gnarly. I can hear the sound of a tire popping just thinking about it.

Most riders use tubeless tires to prevent stuff like that. A normal drop is about 1 and a half to 2 feet I’d say. Big ones can get to be like 5 or 6.
I ride a hard tail for races instead of a full suspension though, so I try to avoid stuff like that so I don’t snap my bike lmao. My hard tail is just straight built for speed. Imagine the Firebolt broom from Harry Potter as a bike. Very responsive, very fast.

To be honest, I didn't know there were tubeless tires. And considering I seem to have an issue with flats, that may be something looking into. I'm guessing they're a little pricier than tubed though?
Also, perfect combo of nerd and biker there to be describing your mountain biking in terms of Harry Potter. :P
And with those drop sizes you're mentioning, 1-2 ft is already making me queasy. Definitely can't imagine doing 5-6 ft ones. (Though does it bring a momentary feel of weightlessness, like when a down-elevator comes to a stop? I'm guessing it's quite thrilling.)

Oh yeah, the first time I got my full bike in the air it felt like a rollercoaster, although most of the time I’m more focused on monitoring my breathing and cardio nowadays to feel the rush. Drops are still fun though cause to land with both tires equally you basically have to throw your bike forward and slightly lift up the tires, then you land and you feel the whole impact. The largest I’ve done is 10 feet and I sprained my ankle doing it.

Your biking sounds intense Gradius. I'd never go off anything higher than a foot or two. I don't mountain bike as much as I want to.
I’m very lucky to live in NC where there are dozens of trails all around me, plus my dad happens to be the head coach of my team so…I get to reap some benefits.
Also, the 10 foot drop scared the sh!t out of me. I put my full sus on it’s maximum squishiness to absorb the impact, I just wasn’t prepared to take the shock with my legs and ended up hurting my ankle

it was brought up on another thread but now I’d like to ask some people here, how good of a friend do you guys consider me as? If we’re just talking about people on the forums, not compared to anyone you know irl. (That’s sort of the best way I could phrase it)
also, would anyone like to rp on the Universe Smorgasbord?

We have a lot of trails here in Virginia (though we do have to share a lot of them with horses and hikers). I just don't have a great bike and I haven't made the time to do it. Some friends were talking about it recently so I might end up going again.
Having a Dad as a coach is super handy. My Dad, my Uncle, and my Grandpa were all soccer coaches so that is my area of expertise.

And the topic of that, since I was thinking about fey contract stuff and things, I'm reminded of Abyssinia and Menelik II. One of the things that led up to the Battle of Adwa was when the Italians came to Menelik II with an agreement called the Treaty of Wuchale.
Now Menelik II didn't understand Italian. So the version they showed him was written in Amharic. And he agreed to it. However a problem arose when the Italians wanted to enforce some things found in the Italian version of the treaty. In the Ahmaric version is was mentioned that Menelik II could conduct diplomatic affairs using Italians authorities. The Italian version however stated that he must do so. And when the Italians tried to enforce that, essentially making him a vassal of Italy, Menelik II didn't take too kindly to that.
Bingo bango boomo and a little while later the Ethiopians won the Battle of Adwa and Ethiopia remained the only African country to not get colonized during the Scramble for Africa.
