For additional shenanigans, spiders are tiny. Halflings and gnomes are small. Creatures can grapple one size larger than them. Small is only one size larger than tiny.
Spiders can grapple gnomes and halflings. With STR=2 they're going to have a hard time winning though unless you have a particularly weak wizard or something they can fight.
