It is a city of nine districts, nine pyramids, and nine lives. Each time the city has fallen, it has risen again to sing its praises to Bastet, the patron goddess who walks among her chosen.
Per-Bastet is the city of cats and gnolls, of perfume and temples, of abounding gold, mithral, and diamond mines, of alchemy and prophesy, of imported spice and draconic slave markets, and of sumptuous brothels and brutal fighting pits. With its mercurial patron goddess and a populace of myriad carnivorous races and predatory species, the city thrives on the energy of its own lack of harmony.
Welcome to the City of Cats! I have always been wanting to try my hand at DMing a PBP campaign, and I think this would be a perfect place to start. I’m looking for 4-5 players, starting at level 1. The campaign contains a couple little adventures, and would eventually take the party to level 5 or so. If you are interested, keep reading.

Recently she tried to leave her old life behind and using her natural charm she found herself briefly under the protection of a powerful noble. Yasmina quickly became enchanted by the ruby ring the noble proudly wore and one night she found herself leaving his quarters with it on her own finger. As she hurried through the dark streets, questioning her decision, a voice spoke in her head. Taking her refuge to a dark alley, Yasmina listened to the voice, presenting itself as Safia, a powerful efreeet who had been imprisoned into the magnificent ruby and if Yasmina would pursue a way to free her she would grant her magical powers of the mighty efreet lords. Realizing she would likely be hunted by the noble's men, young Yasmina didn't see much choice but to accept. Now she is looking to carve out a new life or herself in the City of Cats, maybe as and adventurer.

Marley was born into a warrior catfolk family and tribe known for their fierce fighting skiils and hunting abilities. He was the runt of the litter, often ridiculed or left behind in his childhood by his stronger and more hardy brothers. Consequently he didn't get along that well with his family other than his older brother Neren who encouraged him to be himself and use his wits and gift with language to pursue his own path.
As a young catfolk Marley would spend as much time as he could by the hearth with the village crones, listening to their tales until long after he was supposed to be elsewhere doing chores or hunting. Although he was quiet and soft spoken he was always good with words, and developed a keen interest in books and knowledge of any kind early in life, gleaning what he could from travelers that would pass through the village. In particular he was always curious about Elves and magic, as well as anything to do with ancient civilizations and lore, and this curiosity only deepened when he met the Half-elven bard Aurius, who taught him how to play the lute and the rudimentary basics of the arcane arts.
Soon after Neren left to pursue his calling as a ranger scout for the tribe, Marlin left home as well, striking out on his own at a young age. After journeying deep into the woods to spend several months visiting the reclusive Elves, his travels eventually brought him to the city. Here he spent a year living like a street urchin in the alleys and rooftops, busking with his lute to earn some coin, and always looking for access to books and scrolls that might contain any knowledge of interest.
Description: Somewhat small in stature for a Tabaxi, Marley moves gracefully as he quietly pulls back a dark grey hood to reveal mottled black and dark orange fur. Gold-flecked amber eyes shine below white tufts of fur sticking out from his longish pointed ears. He pulls a battered lute from his back and quickly tuning it up, launches into an instrumental that is as complex as it is strange, yet oddly soothing at the same time.
Name: Arania Valdamoor Race: Drow helf-elf Class: Rogue Backstory: Well into her young adult life, Arania toiled as an underling for the drow great house Valkyr'dryn, her typical duties gathering and preparing various poison-making ingredients both in the Underdark and above. After two decades of such work, Arania became intimately familiar with the methods of creating and utilizing various poisons, though her increased skill did not generate any new opportunities for her. In fact, most of the pickers--the drow used to harvest dangerous chemicals and ingredients--ended up dead very early in the role, due to accidental self-poisoning or to being attacked by the creature they're harvesting from. Arania developed lightning-fast reflexes and stealth, allowing her to succeed where so many of her fellow pickers failed [hence the rogue :)].
An uprising of Eilistraee-supporting drow decimated House Valkyr'dryn and emancipated those who showed promise of forsaking the wickedness of the Valkyr drow. After spending another decade with those who saved her, Arania used her new connections to land a job for a well-known college of magic. As a non-magical researcher in a college filled with spellcasters, Arania's appointment was unusual and controversial. Her background in poisons and antidotes, however, more than made up for her lack of magical ability. She has come to Per-Bastet to research new ingredients and methods of brewing poisons and/or antidotes, and the half-elf typically uses such adventures and journeys to escape the unspoken (though sometimes spoken) judgment of her spellcasting colleagues. She is new to town - she has come to Per-Bastet on pilgrimage, to pray to the great Goddess Bastet and bring messages from her temple in Droisha. She is originally from Winewood and joined the Bastet temple in Droisha when she was a teenager. Daphyra enjoys life in the temple - the service of Bastet offers luxuries and privileges she did not see growing up in the Winewood. There are few harengon in Bastet's service, so she is used to attracting attention in the temple, and takes pride in it. Her vows to the Twilight Domain and Bastet's service mean she is usually concerned with helping those who need the goddess's succour and refuge from persecution. She has a fierce determination and some might say a bit of a saviour complex.
[ETA after discussion with another player] Daphyra came across Natty (post #8) on her second day at the temple in Per-Bastet, feeling sorry for the anxious young paladin and taking her a little under her wing. While Daphyra doesn't really enjoy the research and study side of temple life, she would love to find a cure for Natty, or at least something to help give her a sense of peace within herself.
Physical appearance: Daphyra is a sleek, well-fed hare-like creature, She has multiple beaded earrings in her long ears and always wears the white robes of her clergy. Her bright eyes and bushy tail are hallmarks of her zest for life.

Backstory: Few things in the multiverse are as dreadful as an encounter with a Vampire.. and fewer live to speak of them. Natasha Dinavere is one of those unlucky few. A Paladin of Helm in Faerun, she was sent along with other Paladins and Clerics to battle a group of Vampires known as the Szarlnaxi in Baldur’s Gate… but it didn’t go as planned. Natasha awoke after a grueling battle with puncture wounds in her neck among the bodies of her fellow holy men and women, and did all she could… ran. She ran, and ran, and ran. But when a strange hunger came to her, she indulged in it, her eyes seeing only red. When the red cleared, a young couple was dead and she was horrified. She did not know what else to do, so she paid a Wizard to transport her as far away from Faerun as possible. This brought her to Per-Bastet, and it is here where she seeks to atone for her sins and make right the wrong of her transformation into something… terrible.
(After a convo with another player) Natasha met Daphyra on her first day in Per-Bastet, being drawn to the Harengon due to her status as a Cleric (and also because of her fluffiness) so that she could help Natasha find some semblance of peace and purpose. The two became friends fast, and seldom can Nat be seen far from Daphyra’s side.
Physical Appearance: Though in a quasi-state between life and death, Natasha is a beautiful woman with dark hair, green eyes, and a constant smile, but her deathly pale skin gives most onlookers a view into the inner darkness around her tainted soul. She is always seen in her armor, rarely removing it or her holy symbol as she views it as something that can hopefully stave off her hunger. She carries a sword and shield, and is constantly on the watch for undead, specifically Vampires, everywhere she goes - giving her a bit of paranoia.

Name: Felix Wallace Race: Human Class: Wizard (going "order of scribes") Backstory: A couple of years ago, Felix graduated form the Arcane Academy in Baldur's Gate. Since a young age he found peace in reading book and his love for collecting books allowed him to obtain his first position at Candlekeep. Not all apprentice are lucky enough to secure a place there. At the Keep, after the first two years of studies, the young mages can join expeditions to far away land, to collect information on new culture, and Felix took the opportunity to visit Per-Bastet - the City of Cats. He arrived by boat a week ago and is slowly getting his bearings, his skills for communication helping a lot. But Felix has an additional personal quest; he is on the lookout for a unique book that he could bring back to CandleKeep to secure his position of Librarian.
Physical appearance (descriptions or pictures): Felix is a 5"5 tall human, in his 20's. Not a lot of confidence, he finds shelter in books. Because of this passion for reading, he got his surname "Bookworm" or. "Wormy" from his colleagues.
Name: Tazz Sarcophilus Race: Half-Orc Class: Barbarian Backstory (as long or as short as you’d like): Tas grew up in the forest near the small Kingdom of Murkford and was trained by his mother to be a warrior from a young age. When rumors of gold in a nearby elven village surfaced, the king of Murkford sent in a goon squad to destroy the village and run the elves out of the forest. In the process of ousting the elves, most of the forest around Murkford caught fire and Tazz's village was caught in the path of destruction. He managed to escape the inferno, but the rest of his clan was not so lucky. Despite his loss, Tazz doesn't hold anyone responsible. In his mind, his village wasn't attacked directly, and the fire was an unfortunate accident - it had, after all, been a particularly dry season. Sure, the goon squad had been careless, but a lightning strike could have just as easily set the forest ablaze. What are you gonna do? Maybe it's the will of the universe or maybe it's just a case of sh!t happens. He doesn't know, or really care, if the rumors of gold were true. Now he seeks the glory for his lost clan, and a connection to others so that he's not totally alone in this world. Tas is good natured, but he is, after all, a barbarian, so he loves a good fight and has respect for a worthy opponent. If he doesn't kill an opponent outright, he's likely to buy them a beer and toast their bravery. He is intensely loyal to his friends, considering them his family now that he has none. Surprisingly he is proficient with the flute. He was taught to play by his father, and often plays while resting - he finds it relaxing, especially after a hard battle. He has a soft spot for baby animals, actually almost ANY animal. When he heard there was a whole village of cat people...well, he just HAD to see that it for himself - maybe even make friends with some of the cat people.
Physical appearance (descriptions or pictures): Tazz is big, even by Half-Orc standards. He stands 6'5" and weighs 220 lbs. He has thick, wavy black hair that falls to about his shoulders and a long black beard that he parts into 2 braids. He wears no armor - in fact he rarely wears a shirt - just boots and a leather kilt with his battle axe strapped to his back - unless the weather forces him to wear more. He feels that facing an enemy bare-chested is much more intimidating - showing his foe he has no fear.

Backstory: Born in the slave pits of Per-Bastet; Grexes Bloodmane was taken from his mother as a cub and sent to the fighting pits. As Grexes grew he found to be twice the size of most of the kids which sped his training time. He was forced to learned quickly and was thrown into his first match. During his first battle he was scared, he didn’t want to kill his opponent, but he knew if he didn’t he would die. Struggling on the ground Grexes natural instinct took over as his claws for the first time retracted. He swung his claws, in upward motion, slashing his opponents throat. Blood spilling covering Grexes he stood in silence, looking at his hands. A faint cheering begin to make its way to him; he looked at the crowd victorious as the announcer named him the “Bloody Lion”!
Fast forward 15 years later, Grexes has just earned enough gold to buy his freedom. Now a free man he travels, the cities, the districts in search of employment, because who wouldn’t want the legendary Bloody Lion as their bodyguard.
Physical appearance: Standing at 7’2 and 260 lbs, Grexes has many battle scars covering his body from head to toe. His hair a deep red color, with two braids on his right side. His armor a combination of chainmail and fabrics.

The figure, a powerful genie, offered to give him the power he needed to get his revenge and rescue his family. Without hesitation, he agreed to the deal and upon waking, he found himself imbued with magical abilities beyond his wildest dreams.
However, when Banduin finally escaped the Gnoll's clutches and set out to save his family, he discovered that they had already been sold to the highest bidder and were nowhere to be found. Overcome with rage and desperation, he set out on a journey to track down the Gnolls and find his loved ones.
Banduin remained focused on his goal, driven by his unwavering desire for vengeance and his love for his family. His journey eventually led him to the city of Per-Bastet, discovering that the Gnolls who sold his family were part of a larger criminal organization that operated throughout the land.

He broke his arm badly at one point, and would have been a cripple for life if it weren’t for the blessing of a priest. Later, he contracted what we call diabetes…only to be healed again. So he decided to turn his life to religion. He’s now traveling, trying to spread the light. That’s why he’s here. Physical appearance: about 6 ft tall, brown hair, blue eyes. A few scars on his face from several things-ranch accidents, mostly. He’s considered fairly attractive, and has a good metabolism.

Name: Navys Imbixtellrhyst (they/them) Race: Green Dragonborn Class: Bard Backstory When they were little, they saw a bard, Olva Bluesky, perform in their hometown, and were in awe! Ever since that day, he had always wanted to be a bard himself, and entertain the world! Their parents, however, wanted them to be a politician/leader. They weren't happy for years of his passion being neglected, so they practiced in their own in their attic. Once their parents found out, they destroyed their lute, and grounded them. They ran away that night, only to find, the next morning, the verry bard that inspired him in the first place! The two of them met, and talked, and once the bard realized what Navys was going through, they decided to give Navys a new lute so that he could practice and become the bard of his dreams! That is exactly what Navys did! He traveled, entertaining folks and learning new thinks as he went. Now, Navys is early into adulthood, still being the bard that they've always wanted to be! His mother, a poor girl abandoned by a frivolous lover, had no means to care for him and hoped the monks would. She did not know that it was a monastery devoted to the martial arts. Initiate 12 grew up without a name, but he nonetheless grew up loved. The monks and other initiates could be stern and demanding, but such was their discipline. They were never abusive nor cruel; all praise and punishment was given with equal justice. Initiate 12 grew tall and lean and quite dextrous. Only 14, he was chosen to join the monks' annual expedition outside the walls of their home. They traveled a circuit of nearby towns and cities. Initiate 12 would perform before the crowds, engaging in mock-fights and acrobatic displays of power and agility. Others of the monks would offer healing and sell various crafts and potions that the monks had made. It was the best year of his life. Now, at 18, he has been told to find his place in the universe; to make the connection that will define his role in this life. Per-Bastet was a favorite stop on his earlier tour. It will be a good place to earn a name.

Backstory: Well into her young adult life, Arania toiled as an underling for the drow great house Valkyr'dryn, her typical duties gathering and preparing various poison-making ingredients both in the Underdark and above. After two decades of such work, Arania became intimately familiar with the methods of creating and utilizing various poisons, though her increased skill did not generate any new opportunities for her. In fact, most of the pickers--the drow used to harvest dangerous chemicals and ingredients--ended up dead very early in the role, due to accidental self-poisoning or to being attacked by the creature they're harvesting from. Arania developed lightning-fast reflexes and stealth, allowing her to succeed where so many of her fellow pickers failed [hence the rogue :)].
An uprising of Eilistraee-supporting drow decimated House Valkyr'dryn and emancipated those who showed promise of forsaking the wickedness of the Valkyr drow. After spending another decade with those who saved her, Arania used her new connections to land a job for a well-known college of magic. As a non-magical researcher in a college filled with spellcasters, Arania's appointment was unusual and controversial. Her background in poisons and antidotes, however, more than made up for her lack of magical ability. She has come to Per-Bastet to research new ingredients and methods of brewing poisons and/or antidotes, and the half-elf typically uses such adventures and journeys to escape the unspoken (though sometimes spoken) judgment of her spellcasting colleagues.

Backstory: Daphyra is a scholar priest in the service of Bastet. She is new to town - she has come to Per-Bastet on pilgrimage, to pray to the great Goddess Bastet and bring messages from her temple in Droisha. She is originally from Winewood and joined the Bastet temple in Droisha when she was a teenager. Daphyra enjoys life in the temple - the service of Bastet offers luxuries and privileges she did not see growing up in the Winewood. There are few harengon in Bastet's service, so she is used to attracting attention in the temple, and takes pride in it. Her vows to the Twilight Domain and Bastet's service mean she is usually concerned with helping those who need the goddess's succour and refuge from persecution. She has a fierce determination and some might say a bit of a saviour complex.
[ETA after discussion with another player] Daphyra came across Natty (post #8) on her second day at the temple in Per-Bastet, feeling sorry for the anxious young paladin and taking her a little under her wing. While Daphyra doesn't really enjoy the research and study side of temple life, she would love to find a cure for Natty, or at least something to help give her a sense of peace within herself.
Physical appearance: Daphyra is a sleek, well-fed hare-like creature, She has multiple beaded earrings in her long ears and always wears the white robes of her clergy. Her bright eyes and bushy tail are hallmarks of her zest for life.

Backstory: Few things in the multiverse are as dreadful as an encounter with a Vampire.. and fewer live to speak of them. Natasha Dinavere is one of those unlucky few. A Paladin of Helm in Faerun, she was sent along with other Paladins and Clerics to battle a group of Vampires known as the Szarlnaxi in Baldur’s Gate… but it didn’t go as planned. Natasha awoke after a grueling battle with puncture wounds in her neck among the bodies of her fellow holy men and women, and did all she could… ran. She ran, and ran, and ran. But when a strange hunger came to her, she indulged in it, her eyes seeing only red. When the red cleared, a young couple was dead and she was horrified. She did not know what else to do, so she paid a Wizard to transport her as far away from Faerun as possible. This brought her to Per-Bastet, and it is here where she seeks to atone for her sins and make right the wrong of her transformation into something… terrible.
(After a convo with another player) Natasha met Daphyra on her first day in Per-Bastet, being drawn to the Harengon due to her status as a Cleric (and also because of her fluffiness) so that she could help Natasha find some semblance of peace and purpose. The two became friends fast, and seldom can Nat be seen far from Daphyra’s side.
Physical Appearance: Though in a quasi-state between life and death, Natasha is a beautiful woman with dark hair, green eyes, and a constant smile, but her deathly pale skin gives most onlookers a view into the inner darkness around her tainted soul. She is always seen in her armor, rarely removing it or her holy symbol as she views it as something that can hopefully stave off her hunger. She carries a sword and shield, and is constantly on the watch for undead, specifically Vampires, everywhere she goes - giving her a bit of paranoia.

Backstory: A couple of years ago, Felix graduated form the Arcane Academy in Baldur's Gate. Since a young age he found peace in reading book and his love for collecting books allowed him to obtain his first position at Candlekeep. Not all apprentice are lucky enough to secure a place there. At the Keep, after the first two years of studies, the young mages can join expeditions to far away land, to collect information on new culture, and Felix took the opportunity to visit Per-Bastet - the City of Cats. He arrived by boat a week ago and is slowly getting his bearings, his skills for communication helping a lot. But Felix has an additional personal quest; he is on the lookout for a unique book that he could bring back to CandleKeep to secure his position of Librarian.

Name: Tazz Sarcophilus

Backstory (as long or as short as you’d like): Tas grew up in the forest near the small Kingdom of Murkford and was trained by his mother to be a warrior from a young age. When rumors of gold in a nearby elven village surfaced, the king of Murkford sent in a goon squad to destroy the village and run the elves out of the forest. In the process of ousting the elves, most of the forest around Murkford caught fire and Tazz's village was caught in the path of destruction. He managed to escape the inferno, but the rest of his clan was not so lucky. Despite his loss, Tazz doesn't hold anyone responsible. In his mind, his village wasn't attacked directly, and the fire was an unfortunate accident - it had, after all, been a particularly dry season. Sure, the goon squad had been careless, but a lightning strike could have just as easily set the forest ablaze. What are you gonna do? Maybe it's the will of the universe or maybe it's just a case of sh!t happens. He doesn't know, or really care, if the rumors of gold were true. Now he seeks the glory for his lost clan, and a connection to others so that he's not totally alone in this world. Tas is good natured, but he is, after all, a barbarian, so he loves a good fight and has respect for a worthy opponent. If he doesn't kill an opponent outright, he's likely to buy them a beer and toast their bravery. He is intensely loyal to his friends, considering them his family now that he has none. Surprisingly he is proficient with the flute. He was taught to play by his father, and often plays while resting - he finds it relaxing, especially after a hard battle. He has a soft spot for baby animals, actually almost ANY animal. When he heard there was a whole village of cat people...well, he just HAD to see that it for himself - maybe even make friends with some of the cat people.
Physical appearance (descriptions or pictures): Tazz is big, even by Half-Orc standards. He stands 6'5" and weighs 220 lbs. He has thick, wavy black hair that falls to about his shoulders and a long black beard that he parts into 2 braids. He wears no armor - in fact he rarely wears a shirt - just boots and a leather kilt with his battle axe strapped to his back - unless the weather forces him to wear more. He feels that facing an enemy bare-chested is much more intimidating - showing his foe he has no fear.

Backstory: Born in the slave pits of Per-Bastet; Grexes Bloodmane was taken from his mother as a cub and sent to the fighting pits. As Grexes grew he found to be twice the size of most of the kids which sped his training time. He was forced to learned quickly and was thrown into his first match. During his first battle he was scared, he didn’t want to kill his opponent, but he knew if he didn’t he would die. Struggling on the ground Grexes natural instinct took over as his claws for the first time retracted. He swung his claws, in upward motion, slashing his opponents throat. Blood spilling covering Grexes he stood in silence, looking at his hands. A faint cheering begin to make its way to him; he looked at the crowd victorious as the announcer named him the “Bloody Lion”!
Fast forward 15 years later, Grexes has just earned enough gold to buy his freedom. Now a free man he travels, the cities, the districts in search of employment, because who wouldn’t want the legendary Bloody Lion as their bodyguard.

Name: Banduin Ballistaar

Backstory: Meet Banduin, a man who was born into a life of poverty and struggle in the scorching deserts of Nuria Natal. Despite the hardships, Banduin lived a simple and content life with his parents and younger siblings until one fateful day, everything changed.
Banduin and his family, along with the entire village they lived at, were attacked by gnoll slavers and captured to be sold in the slave markets. Banduin was separated from his family at the time of the attack, and unsure of their fate. He knew he had to escape and find them, but knew not how.
As he slept one night, he was visited in a dream by a mysterious figure who offered him immense power in exchange for a favor. The figure, a powerful genie, offered to give him the power he needed to get his revenge and rescue his family. Without hesitation, he agreed to the deal and upon waking, he found himself imbued with magical abilities beyond his wildest dreams.
However, when Banduin finally escaped the Gnoll's clutches and set out to save his family, he discovered that they had already been sold to the highest bidder and were nowhere to be found. Overcome with rage and desperation, he set out on a journey to track down the Gnolls and find his loved ones.
Banduin remained focused on his goal, driven by his unwavering desire for vengeance and his love for his family. His journey eventually led him to the city of Per-Bastet, discovering that the Gnolls who sold his family were part of a larger criminal organization that operated throughout the land.
Armed with this knowledge, Banduin continued his quest, determined to bring the Gnolls to justice and reunite with his family. Though the road ahead was long and filled with danger, he was confident in his abilities and his determination, knowing that he would stop at nothing to see his mission through to the end. However, the memory of his dream with the genie carries with it a constant feeling of unease..

He broke his arm badly at one point, and would have been a cripple for life if it weren’t for the blessing of a priest. Later, he contracted what we call diabetes…only to be healed again. So he decided to turn his life to religion. He’s now traveling, trying to spread the light. That’s why he’s here.
Physical appearance: about 6 ft tall, brown hair, blue eyes. A few scars on his face from several things-ranch accidents, mostly. He’s considered fairly attractive, and has a good metabolism.

Backstory When they were little, they saw a bard, Olva Bluesky, perform in their hometown, and were in awe! Ever since that day, he had always wanted to be a bard himself, and entertain the world! Their parents, however, wanted them to be a politician/leader. They weren't happy for years of his passion being neglected, so they practiced in their own in their attic. Once their parents found out, they destroyed their lute, and grounded them. They ran away that night, only to find, the next morning, the verry bard that inspired him in the first place! The two of them met, and talked, and once the bard realized what Navys was going through, they decided to give Navys a new lute so that he could practice and become the bard of his dreams! That is exactly what Navys did! He traveled, entertaining folks and learning new thinks as he went. Now, Navys is early into adulthood, still being the bard that they've always wanted to be! His next stop for entertainment is Per-Bastet!

Backstory: Initiate 12 came to the monastery in a basket. His mother, a poor girl abandoned by a frivolous lover, had no means to care for him and hoped the monks would. She did not know that it was a monastery devoted to the martial arts. Initiate 12 grew up without a name, but he nonetheless grew up loved. The monks and other initiates could be stern and demanding, but such was their discipline. They were never abusive nor cruel; all praise and punishment was given with equal justice. Initiate 12 grew tall and lean and quite dextrous. Only 14, he was chosen to join the monks' annual expedition outside the walls of their home. They traveled a circuit of nearby towns and cities. Initiate 12 would perform before the crowds, engaging in mock-fights and acrobatic displays of power and agility. Others of the monks would offer healing and sell various crafts and potions that the monks had made. It was the best year of his life. Now, at 18, he has been told to find his place in the universe; to make the connection that will define his role in this life. Per-Bastet was a favorite stop on his earlier tour. It will be a good place to earn a name.
